I’ve got a 44 that is in what I’d call good shape other than the bore. Half round half octagon I’d let go reasonable. Perfect project.

Just got back from dealing with my dads estate, and had the #2 from Peter Nagel waiting.  I can't find the before pictures, but both sides were cracked through from the corners of the internal hammer mortise.  Here's it welded, and crudely filed back by me so I could see how it came out  Beautiful, well done work by Peter.

Dave,
I see he cooked it at the 400 degrees to take the stresses out.  Does he recommend a full annealing before any bluing or case hardening on a frame like this, like he has done for small parts I have sent him?

Yes, Bob, he drew it out at 400, and recommends full annealing.  I was going to have him ship it through to Alan Springer, to do that, but he wanted me to file it and verify that the welds had no porosity before I did more work to it.  I may just anneal it myself, since I have a furnace and an annealing critical temp indicator tool.  Usually just too lazy to set it up and do it myself.  Take less time to do it than send it off, though so probably will this time.

TIG welding will leave it as hard as glass. Tried to anneal and not much luck. A torch and bailing wire might be the best option.

The highly skilled welder who taught me gas welding used coathangers.  Grin
