These Ballard levers are truly a mystery.....I've talked to John Dutcher about them, but even he doesn't know who made them. This rifle has no serial number, it's not quite like any other Ballard I've owned, the barrel is marked "made to order by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company," and it has the magic lever;  Huh

Same thing John told me this weekend. He said he moved his from gun to gun, and also loaned it to Ron Long to copy for Ron's personal gun. He sold the gun it was on and still has the lever on another Ballard now.
But Joe's lever is similar, but a bit different too.

Bob, You want I should send you the wood cut off the bottom of the donor stock? Nice figure. Could do a double back Velcro attaching system to that Stevens Pope parts Ballard of yours.

Doesn't look like you have enough cutoff to make a perch belly.  Isn't that the reason you cut it off?  I have wood.  Need to get a better BR stock made so 250s will flow like wine in the Tri-cities vineyards  Roll Eyes

Joe the extra scroll to hold the panels and the bar across the center are both different than John Dutcher's and Ron Long's copy of Dutcher's lever. But general shape is similar. Suppose one is a copy of the other, but no telling which was first?

I hope others who might have one of these style levers see your post Joe and show more! I think it's neat and hope there's more out there!

Nice work; indeed; it's going to be even more of a head-turner when finished.

One question, though.  The forearm looks period and appropriate, seems to fit very well, and appears to be at worst a copy of a Ballard.  In short, it's hard for me to imagine it's not original to your Ballard's current configuration.  So why, as you wrote in your first post, did you have to "wait its arrival"?

Joe, I love how you keep pulling things out of your (derby?) hat.  If that's an inventory tag, 131X is a pretty big number, even for a multi-category collection, let alone a single-category one.  I personally have never seen a dealer use a hand-stamped (?) brass tag, but some museums and even some private collections I've visited or worked in have.  Does the seller know anything about it?

I think it's beautiful just as it is Joe. Maybe get the buttstock done and match the finish, but it's perfect patina to me! The way you brought it together looks like it's been this way for a very long time!

I like it, too.
As far as an olden days Winchester barrel being able to shoot well, I'm a true believer. Mine has capabilities well beyond my own.
