tapered octagon barrel source?
Aug 27th, 2021 at 10:37am
Print Post
I'm very green in the world of single shot rifles, so I haven't been keeping up on sources for things like octagon barrels. Are tapered octagon blanks being made by anyone?

I'm looking for sources of tapered octagon blanks for a 22CF project (219 zipper, prefer fast twist; 8,9,10). But I suppose straight octagon that could be turned to half-round could be plan B

Thanks for sharing Your experienced knowledge, Jeff

I also believe CPA will taper a barrel to your specs.  Tom

Gail at CPA is a good source and Her pricing has better than most. I have purchased several blanks from her and She will do any profile that you would like. I also highly recommend that you also get it polished unless you like doing it yourself. Her profiled and polished blanks are real Jewels and they are actually ready to be blued. One just has to keep them protected through the various machining processes.

Some octagon Green Mt. Barrels are profiled, for example, for a number three Winchester barrel, alleviating having to fit an existing forearm to the barrel. They, and others as mentioned, could possibly do the same for other makers contours. I just ordered and received a number three Winchester contour barrel from Green Mt. in 45-70, and the forearm fits like a glove.

Yes, more good advice, Thank You! I had come across BRC's website on a search, but had not contacted them directly. I was misjudging their low prices as old, not updated recently. They certainly have the qualifications, (and recommendations now) of experts!

I don't need to match any historic profile or existing forearm inlet. This is "frame-up" custom build, and I'm the wood guy.  I was hoping to find someone's "standard taper octagon", that will lean this rifle more toward sporter weight.

Yes. But, don't be in a hurry. She carries or can order Bartlein, Shilen & Douglas and will do your barrel if you are not in a hurry.

Glenn - 2x CPA 44 1/2 w/22LR (Shilen ratchet-rifled & Bartlein 5R rifled), 38-40RH & 38-55WCF (Bartlein 5R rifled) & 40-65WCF (GrnMtn 'X') barrels

Had BRC contour a new barrel to specs shown in a drawing.
Everything fit just fine. Price more than basic but not unreasonable.

Clay, at BRC, contoured two barrels to match the one that was originally on my rifle. Standard cost, at that time, was $100 per barrel for the contouring. I don't know if he does octagons.

Other than a few Green Mountain octagon barrels I usually do my own. That way I can match it to the wood if need be. Only problem is that my machine only has 29" of travel.

The last three half octagon to round profiled and polished Douglas Premium blanks that I purchased to also fit the existing wood. Where all under 350 dollars each delivered to me. I just could not justify the time and effort being spent in doing the same myself when I could be working on getting those rifles up and running competitively within a couple of days each or at times even less. Not including any rust blueing and none being wanted at the time including my own as the barrels were actually that nice. And they could then be done during the off season if one chose to do so during that time.
Below is a picture of my own and chose not to have it blued.

well, I'm moving forward on this project, with a tapered octagon barrel from BRC. Clay has been very helpful! Thanks for guiding me to them!

Barrel tenon is 1-5/8" long~ half threaded, half smooth x .75" major thread diameter/ .71" minor-smooth diameter.

Any concerns about chambering a 224 Valkyrie (55,000 psi) inside that tenon, leaving only .14" barrel steel around the chamber?

I should probably move the action pictures from the other thread section, if i knew how..

Another vote for Green Mtn if you want a tapered barrel that will duplicate a specific style.  What receiver are you using?  I liked that my lightweight tapered barrel for my 25-20 came with a cylindrical section, part of which I retained when threading and chambering to yield a Ballard style “tulip” on my little smooth side low wall. It looked great!  Roll Eyes

Nice choice in regards to your BRC barrel selection.
Ken Lewis's prior testing results have been pretty outstanding in regards to their potential for accuracy. This he has shown here numerous times and it appeared to also have been easy for him to also achieve.
