Neat Borchardt. Looks like a heavy barrel full octagon with pistol grip. Express rifle?

You don't need no 'stinkin' rifle to kill a black bear.  My brother-in-law who passed way to early in his mid 60s would tell a story of when he was called by a local hunter to track a wounded bear with his Karelian bear dog.  The dog jumped over a log and was attacked by the bear.  Dan jumped in and sunk his hunting knife in the hears skull but it was still clamped on to the dog so he grabbed a rock and bashed its skull in.  We always thought it was a tall tale until his wake when the other two guys who were with him (drunk) armed with only a shotgun told the story in more detail corroborating Dan's account of the kill.

RIP Dan Gustafson.

L.A. Huffman was a famous Montana photographer. Some of his other photographs were unique ones of buffalo hunters at work on the last herds on the northern plains. Theodore Roosevelt visited his studio and bought 6 large photos that hung in the White House. Some of his photos were used as models for Frederick Remington's work. A friend of mine is his great grandson and has some of his large photos. They are very nice! George Shields was editor of the American Field magazine.

The ones I have seen were either landscapes or Indian portraits. The photos that remained in the family were well distributed throughout the family apparently.  I'll quiz him next time I see him. As I'm sure you know, several books have been published of his photos.

Thanks, I appreciate your effort and if any thing comes of it please let me know.
I have Len Peterson's book on Huffman that is where I saw the photo of Partello who is the soldier in the photo, I have one of the 12-14 ribbons that he is wearing, that is why I am interested in an original photo.
Thanks Don

Why does this thread keep disappearing?
After a week or two it does not show up in the list of Rifle Photos topics
