If I remember correctly, Augusta lived in the Craig Colorado area.

Did a little snooping, and found that Augusta and her husband lived in or near a very small town of Lay, which no longer exists. It was due west of Craig on the highway to Maybel CO. Near where I used to hunt deer and antelope some 50 years ago.

frnkeore    Same photo and info I stumbled on, different source. I need to learn how to post info and photographs, or just wait for someone else to do the work. But do find it interesting and informative. Thanks for posting.  Krag

A Ballard fan and a Model 1885 fan. Almost looks like all three hit the deer.

The guy in the middle has what appears to me to be a Mauser 1871 sporting rifle.  Very high end.  Double set triggers, pistol grip checkered stock, full length rib, probably has a pop up tang sight that lays flush in the tang.
That's a VERY unusual rifle for the time in such a primitive setting.  Inquiring minds want to know! Roll Eyes

That is a very cool Mauser. Great photo! I like his dog too!

Looks more like one of the early Mannlichers. These guys probably guided a European hunting party around 1890 and were rewarded with one of the European's rifle.

It looks like it has a En Bloc magazine, like a 1888 Commission rifle (with carbine bolt handle).

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Must have been a fairly early season hunt with as heavy a velvet as those antlers have! Some nice old classic guns for all three men!

Ballard looks like a heavy barreled Pacific model.

I expect if you wanted to eat in those days you went out and got it and never mind the season.
Incidentally when were seasons for hunting brought in.
Those fellows not like the woke delicate flowers of today.

It might even be the #5 1/2 Montana model that all had extra heavy barrels, and were chambered in big cartridges!

That would have been my guess too Vall if it had a shotgun butt.
