I have always presumed that the designation "needle gun" in the quoted text was just an early designation for a cartridge gun having a breech mechanism that vaguely resembled the German-patent Dreyse-designed guns that were characterized by a relatively long and thin "needle" that penetrated a paper-bodied cartridge to some depth before denoting the internal cap/primer. Such firearms had a brief mid-1800s popularity in Europe, were also patented in the US by John Klein in 1849, and were made here in relatively small numbers by George Forster of Taunton, Massachusetts.

And to answer Joe's question, Bill is embarrassed!  Lucretia Borgia was indeed a trapdoor, not a rolling block.  (Getting old is pigeon poop!)

Not so fast Bill. If someone had asked me, I would have said it was Custer and his rolling block named Lecretia Borgia.  I had to look it up.

Oh come now, Joe; that ain't George Armstrong.  Plus I'm pretty sure that Custer's rolling block was a sporter.

Which does lead into a question.  Since the rolling block has three barrel bands, it's a Remington rather than a Springfield, right?

I knew that wasn't Custer in the picture but I did think it was Custer who had a rifle named Lucrecia Borgia. I get Custer and Cody mixed up.  Dialectic I am.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Yes, and his Ballard is either a pre-Marlin, or a first year Marlin using the leftover Brown lever as it has the open loop and pinned frame.

And if the cartridges in his bandolier are for his rifle, I'd guess the chambering is either .44 RF or .38 RF.  Would that make the rifle more likely pre-Marlin?

Without seeing the priming system on his cartridges, it's tough to say either way. Pre-Marlin were rimfire, but Marlin were reversible firing pins, so they shot both RF or CF.
Unfortunately his hand and the sling are hiding the rear of the receiver so I can't see if it's rimfire/percussion like a Brown Ballard, or strictly cartridge like a Marlin Ballard. Also can't see if it has the Brown external ejector that was mounted into the forearm near the receiver.

I think this gentleman is rethinking his choice of a buffalo rifle.

That particular copy is still available at $137.00 plus shipping.  Other copies are available for much less and much more on bookfinder.com.

I have that book and did not pay near that much for it. Try ABE Books. Likely where I got it.

I see a few pictures of natives with buffalo rifles.

Jerry Potts was a Peigan War Chief and was also the Scout for the Northwest Mounted Police and he supplied buffalo for them with his .44 Henry Rimfire 1866 Winchester rifle.

Although it was not a single shot the 1866 Winchester shot a 200 grain bullet that had a velocity of 1,125 fps and 568 ft. lb.

Pictures of the remains of Jerry's firearms that shot 40 native warriors over his life time and many buffalos.

I believe Custer's last sporting rifle was a Remington .50-70 Rolling Block Sporter with a 28" barrel and single set trigger that he ordered in 1872 and received in 1873.
