Vall,
It's not really a thing, I stole the concept from an internet search...

"The .32-40 WCF, Darling of the Schuetzen Game --The .32-40 was actually a Ballard development; the WCF tag came later."

it's light humor designed to draw out a few that pay attention, you caught it.
I think when it comes to marking my barrel, I'll probably confuse the unsuspecting even more by stamping it 32-40 Ballard, since it is a Ballard.  I have a high wall build that uses the same cartridge but it's stamped 32-40 Win.  Donnelly refers to it both ways.

I think in today's world of gun people there are more people who are puzzled if I call it ".32-40 Ballard" and want to know what cartridge that is? The Winchester addition to the .32-40  has become so commonly used that very few know where the cartridge began now. And some will argue vehemently that it's a Winchester, not Marlin cartridge. I happen to have old ammo in .32-40 made by Winchester that usually settles the debate when they see even Winchester labeled their ammo, ".32-40 Ballard & Marlin" on the box. Smiley

Had some work that needed hardened once that was finished I ramped down the oven and cased a couple of Ballards that have been lingering.  One is the Ballard in discussion the other is the 28 I recently shot at Stars and Stripes with some struggles.

Greg,

Amazing colors.  I remember once you told me you were going to try peach pits to get more orange/reds.  Did that ever work??

Here's a couple pics of the 28-30 recently colored with new triggers in to replace the problem childs I had... The lever and butt plate will get nickel plated when I get time to finish polish and do it - slacker such as I, wood? nah it'll shoot.  Wink

John,
I use both chokecherry, peach pits, and leather charred ground up in my mix, occasionally I get some reds and oranges but I can't say what gives.  I use the same ingredients, temps, and water with little variation and each one is slightly different.  The 28 came out with some yellows this time - real pronounced coming out of the quench, fading in just a short time...

Greg,
When are you going to do a 28 G&H?  Mine feels lonely knowing it is the only chambering of its kind in existence.

Funny you should ask...  I'm working on a couple of them in my spare time, a 28 G&H on a Zettler action and a 28 G&H "short" on a Worn action.

Was it you that had a long 28 cal bullet?  An old Lyman or Ideal?   I took my rifle to the range last week to try your suggestion on lower velocity but after Spokane I hadn’t put all the ‘stuff’ back in my shooting kit and found I had no way to decap the case.  I did get a fantastic 1 hole group with my only shot Smiley

Jack,
yes it is.  Among other things I was fighting my seater, it didn't like this long bullet and I was out of adjustment (the seater was too -shooting with a scope).  I planned to hand off a few of these for you to try - but forgot.  I'll send you some and then you can go on the hunt for this mold if it works...
In an 18:1 alloy it drops at 185 gr not much if any taper in the bands but as small as it is - seats easily and shoots well in my 1:9 twist rifle at 1300 fps.

Sound good.  It would be nice to get that heavy barrel shooting before I use it as a barbell.
