Bluing a stainless barrel

I know there is some type of finish that would give a stainless barrel a blue-like finish. If anyone has any information I'd appreciate it.

I haven't bought this myself, but a friend bought Caswell SS blackener solution on Ebay and said it worked great on his barrel.

I had CPA do a Teflon coating on three of my RKS stainless barrels. The finish is very durable and looks great.

Nitriding and spray on finishes are also options.

I had a customer send me his barrel to install, it had black paint on it.

Brownells Oxynate No 84 blackens stainless nicely.  Not very gunsmiths are set up for stainless blackening, so it’s generally easier to find someone that will use a spray on coating.

John, I might be wrong but it seems Greg (gt) tested some different products and posted it a couple years ago.  Contact him and see what he says.

Like Vall's friend, I have had good experiences with Caswell's SS blackener.  However, I've done only small parts.  As with most "cold bluing" solutions, something as large as a barrel would probably need patience and multiple applications to get an even finish.

Please post Shon's results once he's done with it if you could!
