All our members under go Range Office training and our range can not operated with less than two people as one is needed to act as range officer. We run timed details, regardless of practice or competition. Anyone that arrives mid detail MUST leave guns in bag or cases etc. until the range officer advises that they may handle firearms. This usually occurs when the detail finishes and before anyone goes down range. if people are down range there is a strict handling of firearms command and policy. We run both handgun and rifle comps/practice under the command of the same range officer (any trained member) at any one time. muzzles may be pointed in any safe direction when being handled. Members shoot rimfire/muzzle loading and cartridge rifle both smokeless and BP.

Too bad there isn’t a standard set of range rules that would be the same for all ranges. That way anywhere you go to shoot or compete, you would be in compliance….

My range rules….

1)Check for deer, bear or wolves.
2) shoot

I waited for several minutes yesterday for a partridge to clear the target lane right at 200.

Until I moved back here in 2017 I used to shoot at the Tucson range run by the county. God help the poor soul who opened a rifle case and the rifle was not pointed down range. Sad
