Barrel Length

I have a few projects on the go and going to order barrels. the caliber that I will be playing with is 35/40 Maynard
what length of barrel should be ordered ? I can always find shorter barrels in 358 but I want the best length for this caliber as well as look. The rate of twist will be 1/10 . I seem to like 28" as a length.
actions are Remington Rolling block and a Stevens 44 1/2

28 seems good; even numbers seem to shoot better than odd nunber lengths.

31 3/4 barrel length is best. My 35-40 is 31 3/4 and it shoots real good. 10 twist is way to fast. My rifle that shoots real good is 16 twist. The barrel on my rifle is full octagon so I think that's best. It shoots real good. Those are my answers based on my own personal experience to the best of my knowledge. Good luck and I think you will like your 35-40, well, if you follow my recommendations that is.

Personally I prefer long barrels on iron sighted guns, so a 34" length is my favorite, but 32" is good also. Most of those I've had barreled are full octagon, except for two that are full round. All are #4 weight as I also prefer heavy barrels.
I read about some comments back in the 1800's by one of the US Creedmoor team shooters who said he only shot round barrels, as he felt they were more accurate than any other contour. I think whatever shape appeals to you is going to be just fine.

Vall I went with your suggestion of a round barrel profile on my last roller, It looks and feels fantastic.I am shooting off the bench hopefully soon as the weather warms up ...this one is a 38/55 RKS gain twist barrel finished at 28" and a little chunky

My roller sports a 34" octagon barrel in 38-55, shoots great and little recoil. It was a 45-70 with more recoil. My high wall is the same caliber with 30" octagon barrel. It shoot good also.

Great! I see so few old single shots with heavy full round barrels that now that I own a couple I'm really fond of the looks. The next build I do is going to be another full round #4 or #5 weight barrel!

I have a couple of guns with heavy round barrels. I think there is an inherent accuracy advantage to them since the liklihood of uneven stresses is less with a turned round barrel than a octagon barrel where the flats were milled one side at a time.

Now if you can get a good "Hex" barrel that is a whole nother critter.
