I use 3/4" 4140 HT shafting for the ones I've made.

I have made at least 20 links, all with oil hardening tool steel.

4140ht(heat treated) and 4140ph(prehard) are one in the same. Rc 28-32 with a tensile strength of 110,000. Machinable and tough! I make a lot of tools from 4140ph and keep some on hand. The last  chamber insert on a tip-up was made from 4140ph.

Have made them from mild steel, casehardened with Kasenit. They have held up well.
