Making 22 rf extractor work

OK folks what is the trick to getting an extractor for a Winchester 22 rf to work?
This is the extractor that goes all the way across the bottom of the barrel.  I fitted the extractor to the barrel and reamed it with finishing reamer and got a nice fit to the chamber.  But will only extract empty part way and then it binds up and will not extract any farther.  I have a theory but prefer to hear from experienced gunsmiths.  Rolling Blocks and Stevens are a lot easier to make work.  Charlie

My two cents but they need a little looseness to function. I made one for a 1885 hi wall 22lr and fitted it really tight and it would also bind so I opened up the tolerances a bit and it started working without binding. It pushes slightly upward before it comes back and this upward motion would cause the case to bind. Hope this helps.

My theory is that as the Extractor piviots that nice tight fitting edge is actually raising up because of the rotation. Ran into the same situation with a Martini in .357 where I used a Center Extractor.  Had to relieve the Forward Edge just a tad.  Good luck 👍.

Well you have confirmed what my theory was about the problem.  I guess back to the work bench.  Thanks

I was wondering about this too. My all original Highwall musket behaves the same as you describe. Most ammunition requires a flick of the fingernail to clear the chamber. At this point , I haven’t disassembled it to see if there’s actually a problem. Being my first coil spring Highwall, I’m not familiar with the disassembly procedure.

Have you checked to see if your ejector spring is OK?

My spring is broke and planned to order one.  Where is best place to order it?
My other rifle is broke too and I also flick the empty out.

Mine is the later version. I took it apart today and found the problem. The wire spring was not properly seated in its mortise on the front of the receiver. Once it was seated and the screw tightened, it ejects empties beautifully. They’re thrown back smartly, hit the tang sight, and bounce off onto the floor.
