Seller claims this is a New Old Stock gun, unfired, but I've never seen a shotgun butt on what must be a pre-1896 model.  I've asked him for photos of s/n and model markings but so far he has clammed up.

Am I missing anything?

Phil

There's an extra filled dovetail on the barrel near the frame,  because of this I seriously doubt that it is un-fired. The stock looks too glossy for a factory finish. I too have never seen a factory steel buttplate like this on a 44, however the favorites had steel shotgun buttplates in this time frame so ??? The color hardening on the buttplate looks new compared to the frame. The breech block and hammer have color hardening which is correct for an early rifle.  A head scratcher for sure.

If that gun is unfired it would be a miracle...

Just learned from seller that the s/n is 2208.  By email, no photo.

So it's in the 100 series.  I've requested photo of markings on the bottom flat of the barrel.

That filled dovetail could be for the rear mount of a Malcolm scope.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen or have a photo of a side plate with the same buttplate. With that low of a serial number, and special order available in the catalogs, I’d believe it to be correct. It’s probably marked.

He says it is.  Asked for photo to confirm.

Even if the dovetail is for a scope, why would someone cut it for a scope, then never fire it? I'd accept if his description stated "Shows very little signs of use", but unfired is a pretty bold statement that he can't prove, and has no proof supporting it.

I have to wonder why anybody would order a rifle in a small game cartridge with a shotgun butt and a long, heavy barrel.  I'd have to be Paul Bunyan to do snap-shooting with that thing.

I have an original 44-1/2 model 45 in 32-20 with factory heavy barrel and love it.
it's a joy of a rifle to shoot.,probably my favorite Stevens.
to me its a perfect small game rifle.i don't care for whippy light guns in the field.
I'm pretty fit(i.don't drink, smoke or eat a  bad diet) and have no trouble carrying a man size gun. Cheesy

The case hardening doesn’t look like any Steven’s I’ve seen. Chashooter’s example shows the typical “ ladder” effect for Steven’s

Whatever the process was that produced that ripple coloring, they don't seen to have been using it when the 100 series was current.  My s/n 2210 is well enough preserved that this is very evident.  The first one I have collected photos of that shows the ripple is s/n 3407

Yes, the color case hardening looks correct for an early Stevens, the later rifles have the ripple pattern.  The colors changed again when Savage took over, or possibly a bit sooner before Savage.

Thanks Guys for saving me money.  Looked at what else he has for sale.
Looks like the same "Case Colors" on a #4 Roller....🤔

I asked him if he knew who re-stocked the clubby-looking Mannlicher-Schoenauer built off of a Greek milsurp. Was rewarded with silence.

That gun is a lot of things, but an unfired original it is not.
