[quote author=293B2D2A3B2C303B2C5E0 link=1707270096/15#15 date=1708359736]Other experts say that the barrel sight was for the Feld,(field target) match at 300 meters and the peep sight had to be removed for that match.
To this question on barrel sight being allowed or not with the dioper, this is a quote from page 3 of this book by Wolfgang Finze:
my translation is:
"Target rifles (whether muzzle or breech-loading) usually had a removable sight and a rail on top of the barrel on which an open sight (the field sight) could be mounted. Depending on whether you were shooting at the stand (175m) or the field (300m), either the rear sight or the field sight was used. A sight consisting of three points was not permitted, so either the diopter or the open sight was used. Sights and field sights were laterally adjustable, mainly to correct the influence of the wind, which was always noticeable on open stands."

I have more than I need German Schuetzen rifles all have original tang sights. I does not stand to reason that the GI who brought the rifles back would have brought the tang and not the barrel sight. I believe the barrel sight was an option that could be bought with the rifle for field matches.
