Building a #4 takedown from a stripped receiver.
Looking for good/old barrels hard to find.
So what is everyone using in their place.?

May I suggest lowering your standards a bit and throw a wider net to include bad old barrels. Lining of worn out barrels is a common practice, and often results in a better barrel.

I also started with an old receiver and wanted to see if I could machine a barrel to fit.  (wannabe machinist) Grin  I found a take off 22 barrel on ebay for $25 that was 25 inches long.  I whacked off the end and fit it to the action and it finished at 22 inches.  It's a Ward's Western Field I think, and looked nearly unused.  It was a great learning experience for me and it actually shoots pretty well.

Regards,
Joe

Do you have a threaded frame or takedown?

I have a take down, But I'm talking with singleshotsam in the other part of the forum and he has been threading the take down to receive a barrel by plugging the take down pin and milling the excess then threading the receiver.

I have a takedown .22.  If I ever get to it I'll thread a new barrel in, then drill/ream for a solid taper pin, drive it in tight, and trim any excess.  Have a medium frame Hopkins & Allen done that way.  Quite satisfactory IMHO.

I have a Crescent Arms .22 rolling block take down. Quite a well put together little rifle. How does it compare to a #4 Remington? My Remington RB experience is limited to a M1905 7mm.

The #4 RB's problem is the aspect ratio of the takedown joint.  It's way too short to control the barrel in pitch and yaw.  Ratio of length to diameter is less than 1.

Don't know anything about the Crescent.

Look at the long tongue on a Stevens Favorite.  That's how it should be done.  Length to diameter about 3:1.

The Crescent has the trigger/breach/ejector spring reversed. I don'r know if any of the parts will interchange.
