When pouring a forearm cam, can babbitt be used as a substitute for pewter?

I did it on my flintlock I built years ago worked well.  But it was 80% tin based babbit material.  Cast some 45 acp bullets with it and looked like the Lone Ranger bullets.  Pick them out of the bullet trap at 50 feet and they looked like you could reload and shoot them again they were that hard.

Yes, Babbitt can be used but use the lead free kind. 89-90% tin Babbitt is the one to use. It has about 4% copper and 6% antimony so it is quite hard. It ages well on the stock with a whitish patina unless you keep it polished bright. Let me know if you need some.

I have a babbitt ingot that has a large #3 cast into the ingot.

Some webpages show #3 babbitt consisting of 83.3% Sn (tin), 8.3% Sb (Antimony) and 8.3% Cu (Copper), give or take a few tenths of a percentage points.

Cheater's forearm cap. Use Cerrosafe or Cerrobend, looks good and holds up well.
Mold must be perfect because Cerrosafe will leak through the smallest opening, including pores of the wood.

Your babbitt should be fine for a forend cap. If you use Cerrosafe don't leave your rifle in a hot car.
