32-40 Hogs

Hogs are making it hard on my deer hunting so, I'm making it hard on them.
A 170 gr cast, in the ear or the boiler room, eliminates the offending party.

Great job. Believe it or not, there's a bunch in Canada starting to move down into Minnesota and North Dakota. Who would have guessed that they could survive in our country.

That’s a lot of pork! Good for you reducing the hog population and doing it with vintage style!

Nasty looking beasts... Here in Georgia they do so much damage to agriculture. Millions of dollars every year. They have decimated one golf course here locally. One caretaker roams the course at night on a golf cart armed with an AR with night optics. We shoot on site no questions asked.

Nice shooting.
Recently at a get together, I had pulled pork and smoked tenderloin from a wild hog, it was delicious! Not gamey tasting at all.

Well, ya oughta shoot that caretaker on sight! If he's impeding those hogs in getting rid of another vemin-ridden golf course, he's gotta be stopped.

They do tear up the fields and pasture. The little "crock pot" pigs with potatoes,  onions  and carrots,  sure make a nice supper after a hard day.

One of my cousins once managed a ranch/orchard operation in Utah. He had big problems with deer and was able to get a permit to shoot them with the caveat that they had to left where they laid. Terrible waste of meat! Great opportunity to shoot but a great waste of a lot of meat.

In Kansas the landowner or his designated agent can shoot hogs without a permit. They can do whatever they wish with the meat. We’ve been fortunate so far as I believe there to be only a limited number of feral hogs along our southern border. The state used to use helicopters to control them, don’t know if they still do or not, but they claim hunting them just scatters them worse to reproduce. They also claim that some landowners will let the hog population explode in order to make more from hunting if allowed. Don’t know if I really believe all that or not.

Northern California once had so many feral pigs that they did it like a fishing licence limit, one in possession and when it was consumed (or gone) go out and get another. I went with a friend and shot a few. Tough lil' buggers. But, as has been said here already, they taste just like the ones in the store. Make good barbeque too.

They will never control the hog population in Texas and most other states. There is too much money being made in attractants, hog "specific" ammo, firearms, etc. They are legal to take 365/24/7. We trap them, shoot them, bow hunt them and thanks to my wife and the spear she gave me for Valentines day, we gig them too.

Richard is correct, so far, they are only in southern counties. Perhaps Kansas Wildlife and Parks is correct in the way they are handling the pigs. It seems like a resource we are not utilizing. Some of the guys who worked for me paid money to travel to Oklahoma to hunt pigs, stayed in hotels, ate in restaurants etc. money to Ok.

I used to, but Walmart decided to close both stores in Portland. Now it's too far to drive outside Portland to see the wild hogs running down their aisles!

you took away their habitat, so they needed to migrate elsewhere. Why, oh why did it need to be here? You should have considered sending them to Slow, Lazy Dog, where he can legally shoot them. Or gig 'em Roll Eyes

I think I'll stick to the hogs at the ranch. Probably not as ill tempered as the ones you have in mind. You can find them in Walmart here as well. Seems like the big ones with a bad attitude, can always be identified by their blue or purple hair. Makes them easy to spot and avoid.
Thanks for the laughs.

Sorry we derailed your thread. Vall started it. We did do it with quality posts and good imagery.

If those hogs ever make it to Idaho they'll be in hog heaven as this is tater country down here in my area. We may have to rename the place Root Hog again. Our tater farmers will have to get the artillery out. Might be fun.  I'm guessing, if they got rid of the hogs once they can do it again.  Smiley

Good that the wee little bullet went into the ear. I doubt that would do  a good job elsewhere on the porker. I shot one with in the shoulder with a 44 mag. The damn thing staggered, looked around to see what bumped into him and resumed eating with the rest of the gang. Tough critters. Took another bullet driven in from the front to get him. Went back to the thirty-thirty.

I am not sure why, but I have a desire to shoot hogs someday.  Looks like I may have to take some vacation to TX.

They are coming down from Canada now. You won't have long to wait to just shoot them in your garden.

went after some back in North Carolina back when i didnt know any better. followed them thru some briar thickets until one decided he left something behind and was returning to find it.it was a Russian variety and was not happy, no time to shoot so i cant relate what a 16 guage slug would do. New underwear was quickly purchased.

Lots of folks round here carry a .44 for bear protection and feel safe. Ask them why not just carry a 30-30 it is lighter and more handy, they'll look at you like your crazy.

My dad taught me to take my time and place my shot. If you are going to shoot an animal, it is only right to make a quick, clean kill. If you can't do that, just pass and hope for another opportunity. I always cringe before deer season when I see guys puff out their chest because they can hit a paper plate at 100 yards. Dad made my brother and I qualify for him each year with the rifle we wanted to hunt with. Three shots had to group in the X ring and be under an inch. It made us practice and learn trigger control. At twelve years old, he wouldn't let us shoot from a bench. We had to use field conditions and shoot from whatever was available as a rest. I am mid sixties now and still appreciate the lessons he taught me. I usually am not too concerned about the caliber. I don't shoot if I doubt my ability to make a clean kill.

Many years ago I killed a lot of hogs in Florida using a 5mm Remington.
Very accurate - a bullet carefully placed behind the ear, or anywhere in the eye, did the job with great satisfaction.
My father also taught me to make the first shot count. That's why I'm a single shot guy, I guess.
Passed the habit on to my own son, too.
