Been thinking about how to mark out the receiver for drilling the cocking plates and attaching screws...

Don't know if anyone else works this way, but I mull these things over and often get solutions when I'm asleep and less distracted!

If I make a pseudo breechblock that spans both the inner and outer sides of the rcvr wall, that has the holes for the screws drilled through, then I should be able to accurately locate the cocking plates and mark where to drill the receiver on the outside. It is super helpful once again to have an original receiver to copy/use parts for referencing.

...Make sense - LOL  Grin?? I will share more once I can get the details of this block sorted out. Makes me wonder how old Harry Eales did this locating? Is his thread still around?

Cheers!

Jeff,

I waited till the breach block was done to drill the cocking plate holes.  A dummy bbl was screwed into the receiver with a 1/4' thru hole.  A bbl thru hole rod held the breach block in the correct place and the cocking pins located the cocking plates.  Worked well.

Thanks John for sharing that thought process... certainly makes sense. I will work on getting the cocking plates cleaned up soon and see how they compare next to the originals.

I've got some interest in the receiver fixture that I fabricated / used to setup this 1878 Borchardt receiver casting. I must give credit to Greg (GT) once again for sharing his guidance with me on this! Greg went through a few iterations on these and the jackscrews are the cat's meow for dialing in the rcvr. Also the one I welded up is wide enough (2.25") for the Sharps receivers per GT's guidance!
GT - Are you OK with me sharing your notes on this? Just thought it proper to ask first. Wink

Jeff,
By all means!  Share your experiences and anything I may have contributed.

Thanks GT...

So attaching a old picture from GT of his Receiver fixture. Uses 3/8 UNC cap screws (bought a bag of 50 online for cheap)... also I used 7/16 UNF bolts for the jack screws for fine control. We talked about making the fixture wider (>1 3/4" as shown on print) to hold the Sharps receivers. I have a note that the '74 Sharps rcvrs are 1.950" wide. Thinking I made mine 2.25" as I wanted room for some padding material against the receiver too.

I made the rebate on the base such that it fits in the inside chuck jaws on my lathe for less stick out.

I added some more holes in the sides for the 1878 Borchardt - add what's needed for your receiver.

At the risk of showing some not so great welds, I'm sharing a few picts of mine. All I can say is that this thing is SOLID!

I hope this helps someone else... I've found it quite helpful myself!

Cheers,
Jeff Pfeifer

Jeff/GT,  am I correct in assuming the bold colored grade 8's in Jeff's pictures are used to zero axially and the four jaw is used to zero radially?

Yes they are Bill.  The first couple of these fixtures I made didn't get these bolts, as they evolved they got them - makes it a lot easier than using a pry bar or tapping with a hammer.

My No3 project. I was lucky, the block shoulders were practically dead on to the receiver face, 5°, and the thread was parallel to one side of the receiver.

I'm gonna finish this, someday. It's a 218 Bee scaled up to 6mm, using 357 Max brass. Tapered half octagon, tulip breech, and then flares back out to a straight octagon at the muzzle, just for fun.

Needs polish and blue, and a proper stock. It's shootable, but I ran into an issue annealing cases so I could form them to chamber. I'm gonna get one of the induction machines one of these days. Dies were made 'backwards', boring them in the VMC with the bar in a collet block. FYI, if you orient the bar to do the contouring in the X axis, the 'normal' for an arc is positive from the back of the machine ... so you have to stand behind it do it Wink

Beautiful milled threads wesg! My friend converted his ACRA mill to use Gecko servos and does these... super clean.

wesg - Also per your induction heating comment - I was watching Hagerty's YouTube channel here:
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
... in a Ford Model A engine teardown at the 2 minute mark he's uses one of these induction heaters ("Mini-Ductor Venom"?) to heat the head stud bolts to free them before removing! Sure looks handy to me ... but this one has a $500 price tag online. Looks like there are a couple of options out there though, starting around $200.

Fun stuff!
