Contender rifle

Years back I conveted my T/C from handgun to rifle. The forearm and buttstock fit perfectly with a .22Lr barrel.
Last year I bought a 30/30 barrel to hunt white tails but once installed it wouldn't break open at all. I contacted the home office and was told to take it to a gunsmith who could remedy it for around $20.
I did just that but even afterwards it still takes both my hands to open.
Maybe I'm just getting to old to preform this simple operation?

You need to find a smith that is familiar with the contender set up.  What needs done isn't  hard but it is a little fussy. There is a spring loaded part right under the chamber that locks the barrel into the frame. When  you pull on the trigger guard, it forces that lug forward to allow the action to open. That lug needs some fitting and smoothing. Not all that hard of a job but can be a little time consuming to get it right.

I think I would try fitting the barrel not the lug.  Messing with the lug may make your other barrels not fit as well as they should.

Trigger guard hard to pull all the way, or just at the end?

With the barrel off, can you push the locking bolt to flush or below the face of the lug?

Sounds like you have an older Contender with the solid (i.e. not split) locking lug. Many had “hard opening “ problems with these causing TC to go to the split, individually articulating lug.

They also changed the pivot point of the trigger guard in later models because they opened so hard. I did the polish trick on all my barrels and it won't solve the problem but it sure helps. Just don't get carried away doing it and take off too much.
