Non-.45-70 Trapdoor extractors?

Print Post
I recently picked up a project Trapdoor to fiddle with.  It's functional but ugly and modified with a cut down barrel and dovetailed front sight.

Plan A for the caliber is light, plinking level .45-70 loads and a .22 conversion liner.

Plan B came to mind after seeing the .38-55 TD in the Classifieds recently.  Tempting because I've already got a "Little Betsy" Sharps in .38-55 and I can use the same .22 conversion liner in both.

Plan C is the possibility of this becoming the .38 Special project I've been thinking about for a coupe of years now.

The thing is, I have no idea what to do for an extractor if I go away from .45-70.  I figure it would have to be a custom part but I don't know how big of a challenge that would be.  Can a .45-70 be modified or is this a make a new one from scratch proposition?

Thanks!

Not sure, but I asked about the adapters in non-Sharps-type rifles a couple of years ago and I think one or two people mentioned running them in their TDs.

I'll look for the thread again in a little bit.

I rebuilt one in 40-50 BN with a BRC barrel and it shoots a 300 gr RCBS bullet better than I can see to shoot it. It would take a little imagination and machining but I think you could fab something up for the smaller cartridges.

If your cartridge doesn't have a 45/70 or 50/70 size head you are on your own to make a working extractor

38-56 has a 45-70 head for your 38

33 Winchester for something smaller  - keep in mind, the load and pressure work for the 30-40 Krag was developed in the old Springfield.
