Saturday we went out and shot a really neat rifle.  Has the Barnes windgauge barrel sight.  Thought you all might like to see it.

The rifle was very accurate. Loads were mild smokeless with 350 grain bullets. It was Jims first outing with the rifle. He was very happy with it. Was the first time I had ever seen a military Borchardt with a pistol grip and the first time seeing a Barnes windgauge sight.

I didn't even know there were pistol grip military Borchardts.  I assumed they would all be straight grip.  Were there many made like that?

A way cool Borchardt.  You're not giving us much history on it, Joe.
I'd like to know what Tom Rowe, Dick Binger, and Roy Marcot know about it.  Smiley

Wished I knew more about it. In Frank Sellers book, he writes there were a few pistol grip military rifles made.

I know Tom Rowe is on the forum, maybe he'll chime in.

I had been looking forward to seeing the rifle for some time. Didn't know it was checkered.

The rifle is in near mint condition. When Jim acquired it he fired an empty case with just a primer. He could not get the action open so a local gunsmith here in town found the problem. The firing pin had .090 protrusion. John made the adjustment on it and it functions perfectly now. John said it had an original firing pin in it, just to long. So we assume that is why it is in such remarkable condition. Assuming It never got used.

Ballards may be weaker,

What a rare and stunning rifle Joe!  I also wasn't aware of any pistol grip military Borchardt rifles, and that's got to be a very rare variation!

Jim Georgan had one with PG and checkered. Stevens Pope barrel in 30 krag. Stock looked like short range. I suffered over it for longest time. moodyholler

Since the .30-40 Krag cartridge let alone Stevens-Pope barrels originated long after the 1881 demise of the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Co., Mr. Georgan's rifle had clearly been modified post-production.  Thus was there a "factory letter" or other reliable evidence of it being a factory-original military Borchardt with a factory-original checkered PG buttstock?

Sounds like it was a re-barreled short range model not a military model. Did it have the full length forestock?

I thought I had seen something about the 1878 Sharps in one of the three new(er) Sharps books from Marcot and Co and just checked but alas not. It would be neat if a book dedicated to the 1878 aand variations were written but I fear it would be mighty thin...

I believe the next volume will be about the 1878.   I had hoped there would be coverage of it in the last one as it has a section on target rifles.

Either way, if that rifle is original, it's a pretty rare configuration.

I love my Borchardt musket!  There's just something about it.
I own many types of BPCR's but this ...yep.
