Thought we were talking about rim diameters, not groove diameters of barrels?

Both cartridges I mentioned have the same rim as the 30-40.

How about the 37 rimmed?. It's just the 303 British case necked up to .375. Takes regular .375 diameter jacked bullets or cast bullets and you don't even have to change out the extractor. Frank

John Taylor - yep, I worked up some .405 loads for a friend for his new 1895 Winchester lever action.  Tough to find brass and bullets.  Relatively light loads - we are older guys. Still rocked my tree.

Oneatatime - love quarter bores!  Flat trajectory, lower recoil.  4D Rental has the 25 Krag reamer.  I may have found my cartridge.

Thank you all for your thoughts, experience and replies.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I use .405 Win. brass shortened about .10" to make my .40-63 Ballard and .40-70SS loads, and use both 370 gr. and 420 gr. cast bullets that are around 1350 fps. In my 10-12 lb. single shots they're very comfortable, even for an old guy like me who hates heavy recoil.

My 25 Krag is on a Borchardt with a Shilen barrel all done back in the 70's.
