Stevens 044-1/2

I bought a "44-1/2" on the Internet that is actually an 044-1/2.  It has the single set trigger and is chambered in 25-25.  SN just below 2800.  What is new to me is the barrel is marked "Special Steel for Smokeless Powders".  I hadn't actually seen that in the flesh before.  Can anyone fill me in on that?  I was planning to shoot my 25-20 in the CBA Quarter Bore fun match next week.  Maybe I can get time to get a decent load worked up for this one.

I've seen a "special steel" stamp on some Winchester and I believe Marlin barrels, but this is at most the second time I've  heard of it on a Stevens.

As to why, the .25-21 and .25-25 were among those cartridges factory-loaded early-on with smokeless powder as "varmint" cartridges.  In my collection, I have sealed REM-UMC 20-round boxes of them, loaded with "jacketed" bullets, no less.  Thus in addition to extra pressure, I'd guess the steel in those barrels was chosen to withstand the wear of the jackets.

Congratulations on your new rifle, it’s very nice. Your rifle is mis-marked as a number 2 weight barrel instead of a #1.  I bought the other 044 1/2 in .22 LR from the same seller that was also mis-listed as a 44 1/2. I was trying not to buy anymore guns this year but I couldn’t resist.
I have a 44 1/2 in .32-40 with a mis-matched serial number, and the barrel is marked special steel for smokeless powder. There are a few out there. A quick look at Stevens #53 catalog reprint lists special steel for smokeless powder as an extra for an additional $3.00

Funny, I got into my 044 1/2 the same way.  Mine was in 25 RF, but redid by CPA with a 17 HMR barrel.  I'm thinking someday maybe a second barrel in 22 mag as there isn't a lot of places you can go in the world of rimfires.
