I tried my 44 .25-20 on my 44 .22-15-60 action, indexed okay, however the .22-15 barrel on the .25-20 action went a bit too far past indexing correctly. I tried a couple more junk 44 barrels on the .25-20 action, one was within 1/16 turn to index, the other was way off. More of a crapshoot than I remember for model 44’s.

Meaning a laminated mainspring?  Wonders will never cease.  Detail photos requested ASAP.

What that looks like to me is that some long-ago owner stacked two early Favorite springs in there.  The physical dimensions of the Favorite and 44 springs are identical, but the Favorite spring is thinner.   WHY it was done is conjectural - an attempt to get a faster hammer-fall, maybe?

I've encountered gimcrack methods of increasing mainspring force in a couple different actions. The ingenuity of Bubba is boundless!

I'm guilty of it once too. I have a little German kiplauf, 5.6x35R, whose mainspring wouldn't reliably detonate small rifle primers so I fashioned a brass spacer to fit under the spring that altered its arc in such a way to give it a bit more snap. Worked, and continues to work.

BTW the rifle is a garden-variety Model 44, identifiable in this photo as pre-1900; as the absence of slotted screws on the right side of the lever and breechblock pivots attests.  Would be interested to have the s/n so I can add it to the log.

The barrel's been cropped.  OEM was 24" for rimfires and 26" for centerfires.  The buttstock of the standard 44 did not change at all from 1896 until the model was finally dropped in the 1930s. Several vendors have new wood, and I recently saw original wood being offered on evilBay.

The model number is stamped on the face of the frame.  Remove the barrel to see it.  I'll be mighty surprised if it isn't 44.

Both CPA and Wisner’s are out of stock of #44 mainsprings, but Jack First gun parts has them in stock for a Favorite that would probably work.

CPA gets them from Wisner so it's no surprise that if one is out of them the other one is too.

I wonder if the OP measured the barrel to the front of the receiver and not from muzzle to breech face?
