adding weight to buttstock

need to put some weight in the buttstock on a designated bench rifle.  Is it as simple as drilling and filling with lead?  Wondering if there are any dangers (to the stock and to myself) with pouring lead into a wood buttstock...don't want to split the wood and I don't need a lead shower.  thanks in advance

Pouring lead into a stock could get interesting.

I have used lead rod in the past, drill a hole and install.

I needed to add weight to a wooden buttstock once, I found a piece of metal tubing with the same OD as a common wood bit and filled the tube with lead. When the assembly cooled, I drilled and tapped a 3/8 x 16 hole in one end of the lead so I could pull it out if needed. Buy a good quality wood bit, not the cheap spade type, and don't drill through the side of the stock.

Another thought....
Lead based Solder will melt depending on the Ratio of the mix down to about 350°.  More coffee 😉

Lead shot and expanding foam. Squirt a bit in, them add the shot. Continue carefully.

VERY little foam needed. Don’t ask me how I know.

What about using Cerrosafe? It's heavy and the temp it melts at wouldn't harm the wood or finish.

The only thing that disturbs me about lead shot and epoxy is that if it ever needs to be removed or perhaps adjusted, the only recourse would seemingly be drilling - bad ju-ju!  Thank 25cal's method is particularly good.

25cals method is what I use and the only one I would recommend.
I made mine to fit the stock bolt hole and found it to be enough.

I used #8 bird shot to fill holes in a buttstock to make a single shot heavier. I just poured it in until flush, and then installed the buttplate. I could shake the gun, and never had any shot move. Easy to dump out later if you don't want it.

A good rule in ANY rifle modification is to make it easy to UN-modify.
