Re-shape a 44 1/2 hammer

I have a pair of 44.5s one has a low profile hammer and works well with my Russ Weber breech seater.  The other rifle does not have a low profile, my question is can this hammer be reshaped to a low profile and if metal is removed would affect the inertia needed to set off a primer.  Any suggestions would be appreciated

Unless they're out-of-stock, order a low-profile hammer from CPA and you won't have to worry.

Weather a CPA Or a reworked hammer I recommend that you adjust the mainspring to give slightly more power to the hammer.

CPA hammers will NOT work in a Stevens 44 1/2.  As I recall, it even says so on their website.

I tried reshaping the hammer on my #47.  The spur broke off.

Had a new hammer made.  Been working just fine ever since.

YMMV

thanks everyone for your replies,  called CPA confirmed they do not have one that will work.  Further question I have one low profile hammer on one of my Steven's, could be used as a pattern what alloy of steel would you recommend to make a new hammer?  Or do you know of anyone that might have the skills to make one for me?

8620 is the standard steel used today if you are case hardening.

2 posters mentioned "Rodney" in the above thread having castings.  Question, are you talking about hammer castings?

Yes, they are talking about hammer castings.  Rodney has castings for lots of different guns.  He is a member here.
