Comparison of Scopes

I guess the gunsmithing section is as good as any for posting this question.  I have several older target scopes (Unertl, Fecker and Litschert) and have wondered how the scopes offered by Hi-Lux and MVA compare.  They are modern glass so I would expect th e optics to be superior but I have always wondered about the mounts.  Anyone have experience with these modern target scopes and how they compare against each other and with the older scopes?  Many thanks again!

I am curious also, mainly with the Malcolm 8X USMC scope and mounts. I have heard that with the 3X and 6X shorter scopes, the mounts aren’t the best.

That's interesting.  I have never heard of DZ Arms.

I've seen a few MVA scopes and their optics and mounts are very high quality.
Only seen a couple Hi-Lux scopes, and the optics seemed decent, but mounts are not in the same class as MVA, DZ Arms, or any of the old Unertl, Fecker, Lyman scopes.

The biggest difference will be the ability to gather light. It's hard to beat a larger objective end for that. Then there is the greater magnification available in the post 1920 scopes.

I think that MVA has the highest magnification in the modern replicas of 10X.

The quality of the scope makes very little difference if the mounts are bad and adjustments are not repeatable. Better to have good mounts on a medium quality scope than medium quality mounts on a superior scope.

Its hard to exceed the quality of a Unertl scope but it also depends on ones intended use.

Thanks guys.  You reinforced a thought I've had on Hi Lux for some time now.  That is, the mounts seem to be a bit lacking in getting the job done.  However, I have never handled one.

Have two DZ scopes and mounts and a MVA 3300 scope that uses DZ mounts. My preference is the DZ scope, to my eye the DZ is the better glass. The only thing that could be improved upon the DZ is a choice of reticles. My first scope was the MVA.

Agree with Dellet and one also needs to consider the abuse of the Unerlt's and the reliable adjustments as was being used by the Snipers in Vietnam and also in the prior Wars. A true testimonial to Unertl's quality of both their optics and their adjustable mounts. And it still holds very true today for our own personal uses.

I can only speak to the MVA A5 Winchester copy they are very good and the mount are exact copys of the Winchester mounts with the exception of the pitch of the thread on the locking screws.

Have a 16X Unertl and a similar 16X homemade scope.
The homemade scope with modern glass is just slightly brighter, but would not fault either.

I have a couple of the original A5's and just recently picked up a MVA copy of the A5,  granted the originals could probably stand to be cleaned but the MVA and mounts leave nothing on the table, they are exceptional in their quality.  For an aging iron sight shooter it makes me feel like I'm cheating when I use them... not that I shoot that much better. The DZ scopes and mounts are quite nice.  I definitely would prefer a finer reticle on my MVA scopes however.

Thanks for that info 40 Rod.  When I got mine several years ago a fellow on here took serious exception to my stating that it was supposed to be a very close copy.  He seemed quite upset with me and told me that they were quite different than the originals.

Mine lives on a highwall that Steven Durren built for me. It suits the traditional Winchester rifles very well.

Chris.
