Help with identifying this Schutzen rifle (Read 4135 times)

	Got this a few years ago and haven't really shot it. I like it for what it is. It is a Martini action of course in 8.15x46R. What is unique is that it has a detachable barrel. I have never seen this on Schutzen rifles and darn few other rifles. There is only the name Willy Jaeger stamped on both sides of the butt stock, this is the only marking. What have I got? More pics available.

	Nice rifle. Detachable barrels are fairly common, but I have not seen this type of release lever before. Fred

	Really? My exposure to these rifles is Gun Broker and the one Haenel system AYDT I owned. I figured a detachable barrel would be uncommon. Learn something new every day.

	Thanks for all the replies. Since 8.15x46R is so hard to come by I wonder if I could have a .22lr liner installed in the barrel? It's either that or I sell it and use the money towards a CPA Schutzen in .22LR. Some more pics to look at. 	Brass is available but you can make it out of 30-30 i believe

	If your body fits the rifle (since they were built for an individual) and feels comfortable to hold offhand, it is worth getting brass and cast bullets, as they are a pleasure to shoot and own in the original chambering. Cast bullets or moulds are available, as are dies and brass is easily made. Loads are mild and the sights are splendid. Getting it shooting will be worth the trouble (if it fits you).

	It's true that takedown Schuetzen rifles are frequently seen but most employ a screw in barrel with a clamping mechanism of some sort. The takedown system on your rifle is rare and you may never see another example. Attached is a photo of a similar system and I've seen another, that employed a rack and piñon method of locking the barrel in place. You should check the bottom flat of the barrel, under the forearm, for marks that may give you some additional information on when and where your rifle was built. There is an excellent thread under the reloading or collecting sections of this website, that will give you additional information on the 8.15X46R. It was the most popular European Schuetzen cartridge and is a real pleasure to shoot. Cartridge cases are available for purchase and are easy to form from shortened and sized 30-30 cases but it is a reloading proposition. If the stock fits you, it will be your lucky day. Since the rifle is a takedown, another option to lining the barrel, would be to have a 22 LR barrel made and turned off center to fit your rifle and use the centerfire firing pin. An extractor built into the new barrel or a separate 22 LR extractor would complete the conversion. Otto

	What they said. It would be a shame to destroy a good barrel not to mention that if it was lined to .22 you would also have to have the breechblock converted to rimfire and the extractor modified. I'm afraid selling it would only get you halfway or less towards a CPA.

At one time it did fit me decently, I gained some weight and now it doesn't. maybe it would be best to sell it to someone who will shoot it and get something different.

	Nice rifle, easy to reload for, if you don’t want to invest in dies, just order som RWS brass, a stop ring 165-185 gr mold, 12 or 13 gr 4227, LR primers. There may even be cast stop ring bullets for sale. Or just sell it to me. Mike

I use 12grs and a large pistol primer, as they are softer and more reliable in some of my Schützens. RWS brass and stop ring bullets. Buffalo Arms do sell bullets, which is how I tested loads before I bought molds. In fact I now have a .320 stop ring bullet mold on back order.
