Stevens Tip Up Rifle

I picked up a fairly decent tip up at the Pacific Missouri gun show this weekend. Complete except for the missing barrel. Nice wood. Only problem is someone had the previously nickeled metal chrome plated. Originally bought it for parts but decided to look for a barrel to put it back together again. It is a centerfire action. I have advertised for one on the for sale form here. I have been thinking that if I can't find a decent centerfire barrel I could try to find a good .25 or .32 rimfire barrel and have it rechambered to a centerfire cartridge like .25-20 SS or .32-20. One of my concerns is rate of twist and bore diamater. It will just be a plinker so I'm not looking for pinpoint accuracy. I prety much stole it for $20 so I basicly have nothing in it to this point. Could relind a shot out barrel but that will get expensive for what I have in it to this point. Suggestions, comments?

I have a couple in the shop now. The barrels may not be interchangeable. There are a couple different frame sizes with the large one being for 12 gauge and the smallest for 22 rim fire. I was given a barrel that someone made by braising a piece on the bottom for the pivot screw. Don't know if it is usable. The large frame I have is going to be made into a 50-70.

I am aware of the shotgun being larger and that there are different sized frames but i am no expert on these even though I have a shotgun, .22, and .25 Stevens Rimfire. No centerfire yet. Does the centerfire use a different frame or is the barrel offset differently on the rimfire and centerfire to get the firing pin in the right place? Mine is obviously a centerfire based on the impression on the face of the breechblock. I would prefer to keep it a centerfire as it originally was and because I don't have one. Planning on using black powder loads because of the minimal strength of the action.

Does anyone know if the tip up centerfire frames and rimfire frames are the same with the barrel offset locating the firing pin?

The firing pin positions are different on the centrefire and rimfire frames. And they are different for different rimfire calibres as well. A .25RF firing pin should fire a .22LR in a re-lined barrel, and a .32RF firing pin will fire a .22WRF/.22WMR.

There are also standard and heavy barrel frames. The earliest frames are brass, and the barrel dimensions for them are different.

I have a Stevens tip-up, I bought off the forum here; it was originally .22 short, recut to .25 Stevens rf , evidently by Stevens under their rework program. The firing pin location remains unchanged from the .22 rf. I believe the tip-up barrels could be reworked one caliber up without changing the firing pin. This made the rework limited to barrel modifications only.

I have not had much luck finding information on the tip-ups; I seem to remember reading somewhere of different frame sizes; seems like there were three. If any one knows of a good source of info, I would appreciate knowing of it.

Good luck with your barrel search; best advice I can give; be patient.

That's correct. No modifications needed to go from .22RF to .25RF on the firing pins. Stevens rebored and rifled a number of their own guns, plus other maker's guns after the .25 Stevens RF came out. I've seen Winchesters, Remingtons, and I own a nice Ballard #3 marked as rebored and rifled by J Stevens to .25RF.
It was a very popular caliber for awhile, and unfortunate that so many nice .22RF rifles were rebored to what's an obsolete caliber now.

As to your action be a center fire; the difference in location of the cf firing pin and the .22rf firing pin is so small that I doubt you could determine without a barrel.

If a .32 Rimfire barrel can be made to fit, you've got a .32 Long Colt centerfire rifle.  Chambers are identical.  Jack Harrison (tenmile) sells brass & the proper heeled bullets.  Load is 2 gr. Bullseye.

I got your email and answered it and as I said, I was not the guy with the mis-matched barrel and frame. The guy you wanted was rustyrlx over on the For Sale section
