Cpa rebarrel

Sent an original 44.5 to cpa for a 22lr. Conversation. 30% ftf and apron  extraction the case only pulls out as far as extractor . (So have to pull each ca out by hand) . I think the firing pin is hitting to high and extractor is to high in chamber  . 6 o'clock extractor and case shows signs of a wrinkle
Any thoughts ? I think it's going back

Thanks doug

Had same problem with my recent CPA re-barrel in 22 LR.
Fixed by a local gunsmith by taking a few thousands off the extractor and fitting a new link with correct hole spacing  so  that the firing pin now strikes where it should.  Links may be had from CPA.

While I'm sure that CPA would have corrected the problem, it was way cheaper than the round trip shipping from Kalifornia to PA.  Barrel is Shilen ratchet rifled and it shoots great.

Image looks like the firing pin isn't hitting high enough to me! It appears to be hitting too close to center, and not catching the outer edge of the rim when striking.

Disappointing, because it's so easy to get that right.

I say to high on the case because pin hits case in the six o'clock position. Needs to be lower. Will call today and see what's going to happen

Thanks doug

Weird! It has a 6 o'clock extractor and the pin hits on the extractor? Seems like a mish mash of parts.

Yes, the 44, 6'oclock and 44 1/2, strike on the extractor. A weak point for both actions designs.

All though some might call it a fault or possibly a week point the CPA 52 I had with a Shilen barrel and match chamber shot well beyond my exspectations so don't let it crawl into your head. The gentleman I sold it to shot a 100 shot bench match with the high priced custom built ARA and RBR bolt rifles. They laughed when he showed up with it and cried when he left.

John, is the CPA also set up with 6 o'clock extractor and firing pin striking on the extractor?

Vall the extractor was at 6 o'clock but I don't recall if the firing pin strike was also at 6' o'clock. I want to say the strike was more towards 9 o'clock but I cannot say so in all honesty its just been to long.
Having made a few 441/2 Stevens, Breisen and CPA firing pins its easy enough to change the strike location where one might think it to be the best. They are quite simple by design all being basicaly the same and quite easy for one to make.

John, I know little about the Stevens rifles, but wouldn't one hole in the block need to be plugged, then replaced with another moved to the new location? In addition to making the pin itself, I mean. I'm not saying it can't be done- only asking the procedure.
I would sure prefer a strike somewhere other than the extractor.

And I wonder if a RF moved in any direction wouldn't move the firing pin tip away from the rim? Seems the entire firing pin hole would need to be moved to change the strike to another location? Unless I misunderstand how this firing pin works?
Looking at my copy of DeHaas Single Shot Action diagram, it appears the strike could go up or down by plugging the breech block firing pin tip hole. But tough to tell for sure without a 44 1/2 here, and I sold all of mine.

I have a .22 rimfire barrel and breechblock for my CPA. The firing pin strikes at 6 o'clock on the extractor. Mine works just fine. There's a trick to getting them fitted correctly. Then they work fine.

1885 Winchester rimfires also strike at 6 o'clock on the extractor. So it's not a unique design.

Jerry, the 1885 is one of the reasons I cringed at the thought of the pin hitting the extractor area. Look at what happens there on those Winchesters that have seen some dry firing, or that have the wear in block or pin to let it get in further. Often, you'll see the extractor mishappen, even to useless.
I thank my lucky stars that mine is (about) perfect- but many ain't. Like I say, little do I know the Stevens, so it may not suffer the same.
