Soldered my first liner! (Read 7861 times)

	Got my liner in and thought I would pass on what helped the job go smooth. Make sure everything is CLEAN!!!, You need lots of heat But: not concentrated in one area. I used Temp Sticks to gauge the progress. Acid Flux for tinning and Rosin for final assembly. Don't Panic! Solder has a Melting point and a Flowing Point. Beer comes after things cool down. David

	I prefer solder, too. Gluing firearms together with polymers makes me uneasy for some reason. Guess I’m an old fuddy-duddy. Does the lined barrel chime like Big Ben when held on the end and tapped lightly along its length? That was supposed to be the test for a solid lining job. I have to say that I can’t tell the difference on target between the duller “clangs” and the more sonorous “bongs” when I shoot barrels I’ve relined.

	nrdavis, may I ask why you chose to solder your liner in as opposed to using adhesives? Lee

	My reasons why: article in "Precision Shooting" about the long term stability of Epoxy seemed like a Red Flag, This rifle is a weekly target rifle and so can see 100 round at a time. The working time for solder is unlimited where as if the Epoxy or Loctite starts to set up that's it. To remove the liner is easy enough and the hard part is done to replace it "tinning the barrel". Last but not least is I was afraid to do it. Look the Devil in the eye and buy him a beer....

	Some epoxies have pretty good shelf life;before catalysis; like 5 yrs. It should be better afterwards. Trimellitic anhydride catalysed Epon 828 will withstand high temps ... for an organic. I like the idea of not using heat. It would be interesting to do a well designed study to see if one is more accurate than the other. Obviously both work. I wonder about the effect of the heat in soldering; do you get mild distortion or just a bit of stress relief? So many questions: so little time and energy.

	n.r.davis, I have lined barrels that were glued 40 years ago and have had thousands of shots through them and they are as good as the day they were done. Your reasons are all good valid reasons and your lastbreason is the best of all. Lee (I was just curious)

	don't fly in modern airplanes.......lots of pieces glued together... I have to believe soldering a thin liner must introduce some kind of stress that a non-heat adhesive like Loctite doesn't

	I consider it quite an accomplishment to solder in a liner and make a nice job of it. We didn't always have "Loctite".
