Brass schuetzen buttplate

I have a heavy brass schuetzen buttplate that I would like to alter by bending up the lower prong so it would be better for bench shooting. This is a new cast one, I don`t want to break it. I think that if I heat it it will bend with out damage. What sayest thou? Thank you, Paul.

Just my thoughts,  I would consider Annealing the But Plate then bend it cold.  Or if I were to try to bend it hot I would use a very light hammer to keep on tapping it as I heated it up.  Most important for me is to get it evenly heated and not to just heat and pound away on it.  Good Luck!

Annealing brass is not as easy as annealing steel! Be sure to anneal it slowly with a wide flame, and immerse it in water immediately to make sure it stays soft.
I wouldn't have an issue bending it after annealing, but before annealing it wont bend much without fracturing.
If it's already fitted to your buttstock, you'll need to be careful when bending to make sure you don't also bend the plate and have it not fit the gun's stock after bending.

Do you think that I could bend it hot?

No, Bend brass cold. It gets brittle if hot, but do anneal it

Chuck is right, you can't hot work brass easily.  Anneal and bend a little and the anneal again.
I'd be tempted to invest $40 to get a brass butt plate from Track of the Wolf and try it.

I fear it will crack even with good annealing unless the total deformation is quite small.  If it were cold rolled brass it might work but casters put all sorts of alloying elements into copper based casting to make it easier to get a sound casting and they don't make it very easy to work.  Let us know how it turns out.

The other trick might be to cut off the lower prong, change the angle and silver solder it back together.

I've cut and reworked brass buttplates by brazing them. I had a small Farrow Ballard buttplate on an 1881 Marlin that some fool chopped the prongs off. Since it was factory and serial numbered to the gun I didn't want a replacement. Instead I bought a copy and cut the prongs off that. Then I drilled and tapped the plate and prongs for 10-32 thread and made up a stud to screw into each prong. I beveled the joint areas and screwed the prongs on.  Then brazed up the joints and filed and finished them off. There was a slight color difference, but the joint looked much  better than had I soldered them on and had a line where they met.
