Moving the Front Sight

How do some of you go about moving the front sight a few thousands?  I have a couple of barrels for my CPA and want them both to zero using the same rear sight.  I've been using a brass punch and a hammer on the front sight forever but it's a hit and miss (pun intended) deal and would like something more precise.

I use a dial indicator and a magnetic base.  I then use something similar to a "sight pusher" and just slowly and gently turn the screw watching the dial indicator.  I basically build something similar to this but I have a brass bolt to push the sight so I don't scratch it.  On the opposite side I drill a hole large enough that my dial indicator can fit the rod through to measure with.

That is a fascinating tool and an excellent idea. Could certainly be designed to work on a barrel (Tougher on a round barrel). A calibrated hammer and punch will work if you use tiny tic marks on the sight and barrel. Find the marks useful as a double check before each shooting session.
Note:  A short Nylon or Delrin punch will not leave marks on the sight like brass.

I've thought that there should be a nifty little homemade device that would work.  The trouble with hash marks on the barrel is that they're covered by the sight globe unless they're pretty long.  The obvious solution is a wind gauge front sight but those are pretty spendy.

You have two barrels for your CPA but only one front sight?   Huh  In that case, the most precise thing you can do is to mount a front sight on both barrels. Zero them once and you're done. Seems a lot easier than shuffling one sight back and forth.

Joe,

I guess I wasn't clear enough.  I do have a front sight on both barrels.  I like to save money where I can but that's not the place to do it! I was asking the question in general since I seem to have spent a lot hours in my life tapping a front sight, shooting a couple of shots and repeating.  I must be getting lazy in my old age.

No matter how much trouble you go through to get them shooting the same I bet it will be easier than getting my rear sight coordinated to move it from the tang to the heel  Grin

At least you know you'll be able to lay down for awhile when you get it moved! Wink

Yup, I did.  Usually shot 200 yds face forward and 300 on back as far as we went, 600, 800 or 1,000 laying around taking it easy  Grin

I've got a picture of Bob shooting in the back position, somewhere. Was fun to watch him shoot in that odd position.

It worked well, but when scores were deemed to be  too low, they started allowing prone x-sticks.  That made backrest obsolete.  The only part of BP longrange shooting that remains traditional and true to the sport is the smoke.  Cry
