A friend has a .310 Cadet and he would like to remove the front from the barrel without damaging the barrel. Can anyone does me how it is attached and how to remove it with little marring.
thanks,
Kurt

It is most likely brazed on. I've had a barrel red hot and still no joy.  Machine it off with a dovetail cutter and have a new, clean sight slot. Just my .02c.

In the 1950s and 60s, it was the done thing to "Sporterise" military rifles----30-06s, Mauser98s and so on. It was also fashionable to shave the cylinders of Webley revolvers so that 45acp rounds with clips could be used. Now, there are thriving business building up revolver cylinders, selling new wood for military rifles and so on.
That is a very nice, original BSA Cadet rifle. Why does your friend want to wreck it? I could understand using it as the basis for a project, if it was worn or damaged.

This rifle had belonged to me. I received it from an older friend, Dallas. In his fifties he mentored me. I was 25.  I have a 32/20 in a Hepburn.  My friend, Adolf shot it and really like the caliber.  Adolf and I have been friends for over 30 years. Our friendship started like a lot of good friendships. We shot high power together. He is older than I am.  It has rekindled an interest in his shooting. This cadet was rechambered to 32/20 already.  It is a tool and the shooter wanted to make it more user friendly. For future reference the front sight was dovetailed and silver soldered on.  It was difficult to remove. The shooter heated the sight red hot trying to protect the barrel.  Still, it would not move. So he machined it off. Built a new ramp which he soft soldered on the barrel. He then cut a dovetail for a Lyman 17A.  It turned out nice.
Thanks, Bill

Continued
Adolf is a very talented self taught mechanist. He has made several things for over the years.
1. L.L Hepburn marlin lever gun sight ( picture my original and three he built)
2. Lyman 17A into a windguage sight'
3. He built me an AR-15 upper in .22LR . It uses S&W 41 mag in a special block.
