Muzzle face? (Read 10435 times)

	Most original and some reproduction single shots rifles have muzzle face left bright. Over time, metal takes on a somewhat darker patina..not always uniform. Do you guys just leave it alone or keep it polished bright?

	I asked once on another forum why muzzle were flat on old guns and was told that barrels were made with a short false muzzle that was left attached and simply twisted off and the cut buffed flat to remove the bur. Some years back I picked up an NOS Marlin 1893 Black Powder Only barrel off EBay that still has it's false muzzle attached. It is chambered in 32-40 but the chamber is not marked. I put the barrel away and used another for the project. I'll need to find where I put it. Bill

	Bill's NOS Marlin barrel is typical of what they did back in the day. The stub cut nearly into the bore, but not off, was left so the barrel could be worked on in various steps without possibility of damage to the crown of barrel face. The last thing they did was snap the end off and then final face it to a smooth, bare finish. This was done after bluing, so they were never blued on the muzzle.

	OK, I need to have a little fun. First to WW. I'm not sure what "mouth fun" is. Lets keep it that way please. Next, I admit I am a little OCD. I love working on old guns, figuring out what works and what doesn't - largely through reading ASSRA, and trial/error. If it works I move on to the next project, if it doesn't work I try to fix it (a couple of times) then move on. Then there are guys like Marlinguy, who are the opposite of me. They love old guns and how they work, and they spend a lifetime figuring it out. They know manufacturing techniques from a 100 years ago. I don't know what day of the week it is. I love reading all the different opinions and facts (plenty of both) and can't wait until one of the old guns cranks figures out which came first - the chicken or the egg. Or how the universe was formed - chemistry/physics or a divine hand. I will keep reading ASSRA to find out.

	My own approach a 30 degree outward cut to just beyond the bottom of the grooves. Check for burrs and then highly polish face so you can very closely examine the lube star when everything is said and done. (You need to *Login* or *Register* to view media files and links)

	Maybe we tend to make this stuff a little more serious than it needs be ,such as, seating depths, alloys, tenths of a grain powder charges and many more. Ledball

	Or not serious enough it depends on the use and what one is wanting to achieve. It's an interesting sport I have shot with those who do it for fun and they always use wind flags. I have also shot with those who are wanting to win and they never put out any wind flags or near enough.

	Oneatatime over the years everyone I have run into out at the clubs range. No matter what type of rifle they are shooting they are continually trying to get to that magical 100 yard one hole five shot group. If a center fire they tend to bring out several loads to try and the samething holds true the next time I see them back out at the range.
