martini accuracy improvement or not

I have been asked about the fitting and bedding of martini fore ends and came up with an answer that I feel covered all bases .. I wonder if members would like to chew the fat about the merits or otherwise of my idea .. what I have done is to make a plate which incorporates a hanger extending forward to carry the fore end ....  The lug   is held on the rifle the same as the recoil lug on a Remington 700,( between the front of the action and the  barrel shoulder ), the barrel then becomes completely free floating  so is not influenced by sling tension hand or bench contact ,or expansion by heat build up causing movement between barrel and wood ..  Rob

Welcome to the forum. Ingenious idea, similar but different from the forearm hanger on a Ruger and others. Think some of the methods to improve the accuracy of a Ruger are to put a screw bearing on the barrel through the hanger or attach the forearm to the barrel. You may gain something, may not. Probably worth a try.

Hi, I had been asked a question about the bedding of the fore end  and contact between the front of the action and rear of the fore end in relation to accuracy of the martini which lead me to come up with that idea I also figure that it would work for any number of rifles which have the barrel ffirmly fixed to the barrel ..  Screws  which attatch the wood to the barrel to me,  means   that the shooter is in reallity holding,  resting or having other contact with the barrel my solution goes more than a little way to overcome all of that  ..Rob

A lot too depends on the relative diameter and stiffness of the barrel.   DeHasse's book on gunsmithing for the single shot and some of the discussions in his single shot action book deal with accuracy tips and tricks.  As I recall some of the early 2-piece stock single shots responded well to fore-stock that was tight and solidly bedded to the barrel with a fine gap between the rear of the forestock and the front of the action

I must have half a dozen Martinis; some are the german schuetzen target type, and some are customized BSAs of varying types.  The euro ones have tight fore-stocks keyed to the barrel with wedges like a muzzle loader.
All of them shoot better than I can with decent loads and properly fitted bullets.  but they all have fairly robust and stiff barrels.  I think some of the BSAs (International and the Marks maybe) have a "hanger" for the forestock.

Did not know the Internationals, etc. used a forearm hanger. Probably for position shooting with a sling. Certainly gives more credibility to the idea.

The Mk 3 International was the one with the hanger.

Rob,  Don't worry about it. If you have not screwed up on this forum, you have not posted enough. Someone will politely correct you. No harm, no foul. Still a unique idea.

I have a cadet shooting a 222r. I have a hanger off the front pin that holds the innards in the frame. It's about 8" long with a bronze screw about 2/3 to the forward end just contacting a GM 1" straight barrel. Shoots better than I do. Still working up loads.     Smiley

Apparently a number of ways that will work.  I have a Martini-Enfield 30/40AI that is mounted to a hanger attached to the action, last inch of the wood bedded to the barrel.  This one delivers under 1/2" groups consistently.  Also have a Cadet in .357Max with the forend attached by a screw to the barrel, bedded there and 1" at the rear, no contact to the action.  This one gives less than 1/2" also, altho I'm pondering some of these different ideas of how to put a hanger on it, I prefer free floating.  GW

Wanted to add that I had to put a sling mount on the barrel of the 30/40.  We used a piece of mild steel for the hanger and it slowly bends under sling tension--want to change that rig.  The Cadet has a saddle ring on the action and I use a single point sling across my chest, for me much better than a conventional shoulder sling.

If the rifle is shooting good to begin with it is best left alone. Accuracy problems more than likely are not the forearm as long as it does not touch the action. My forearms are epoxeyed to the barrel 4" from the receiver and free floated the rest of the way. Spend your time and resources finding the ammunition the gun likes.
