Rob, wouldn't mind seeing a pic of your idea.  Seems rather straightforward and easy to make.  If I get brave I'll steal your idea and unscrew the barrel on my 30/40, set the shoulder back the thickness of the attachment plate and put it on.  It's just that I hate to mess with a rifle that shoots so darn good now.  As has been said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  GW
