Mini-Creedmoor Match?
Jan 16th, 2011 at 2:05pm
Print Post
Hello, In the July/August 2008 journal, an artical by John Merz on a mini-creedmoor match at the Oak Ridge, TN club run yearly by Rick Weber.  Artical didn't go into details on match, it did show Rick holding winning target, and it did say 1/10 distance.  By the size of target & fact iron sights were used, and the mention of 1/10..I assume it was at 100 yds.  Does anyone know anyting about this?
In back of mind I have always wanted to try extended range small-bore, in positions used by the early Creedmoor and Wimbledon match shooters of 1870's and 80's.  I know it would be fun!

I wrote the article because I thought it was a fun idea. Rick runs the two long-range muzzle-loader matches at Oak ridge. the 22 match was designed as a fun side match. It was specifically designed to be shot by anyone with a .22 open sights were encouraged. The target was made from a standard piece pf paper with the sections blacked out at what "looked right" then run off on a copier.

Hope this helps

For several years there was a .22 Creedmoor match at the Tornado Alley .22 BPCR Silhouette Match (the official unofficial .22 Silhouette Nationals) held each May at OKC Gun Club. Their targets are at 275, 300, and 325 yds. A fun match but very challenging.

Wher can I find out more about running this style match?  This might be something we could do @ Chinquapin SV to add to our program.  The BMC range goes to 300 yds... is that enough?

Great idea but you need 200 yards to make it challenging. 100 .22 shot a lot. Rare to see 200 yards. Wind Becomes a large factor at 200.

I shoot out to 200 meters .22 BPCR.  In my opinion, it is the most fun game I have ever shot.  50 meter chickens offhand, 100 meter pigs, 150 meter turkeys and 200 meter rams.  Besides the offhand chickens, the rest of the match is shot prone off cross sticks just like big bore BPCR.
AND, all you need for the match is a traditional .22lr falling block with a exposed hammer.  I'm shooting a single trigger Ballard with a 8x Lyman Jr. Targetspot in DZ rings.  Using the bulk Eley ammo(available from the CMP).
SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

.22 at 200 (meters) is fun indeed - gave it a couple of tries, both with a BSA 12/15 and also with a Converted large military Martini action (Greener NRA conversion of a Mk IV).
This was using the European 200m CF target, keeping the shots in the 9-ring was certainly possible.

And yes, lots of fun, most people believe the .22 is running out of steam at 50, maxes out at 100 and declare you mad for shooting it at 200 - untill they see the results, that is...

The Trafalgar as organized by the UK NRA (that's historic arms) also has a few matches at 200 yds for .22's, quite competitive indeed.

Spotting is a issue .22 on paper @ 200. We use painted steel targets. .22 chips the paint & easily spotted. Want a record take a photo

I shot the match at Oak Ridge that year. The target was a reproduction 1/10th like John said. It was the old (oldest) creedmoor target 6' tall by 12' wide with smaller square" inner" scoring the highest value, then 6' square "outer", then the 3' by 6' ends of the target were the lowest scoring area.

As said above, the 22rf reduction was "about right" at 1/10th.

If you enjoy shooting CF rifles long range, then shooting .22 rifles at mid range distances is a hoot if you don't have access to somewhere you can shoot 800-1000 yds. regularly.
I love shooting my old .22 rifles at 300-400 yds. and it's very similar to shooting the bigger bores at long range.

We were desperate for a change in scenery last year on our indoor matches so I cobbled something together and we shot these at the distances marked -awfulhand.  Except for the bull, which is suppose to be a square, they are close to proportionally correct. We also added a distance so would could get 60 shots in...  The Creedmoor was 15 shots at each distance with scoring as per attached and a total of 180 points possible for the match.
That would be a neat match if you proportioned the targets and shot at 300, 200, and 100 yards.  We could easily put together a 6 person team and attend if you were 1700 miles closer...  Grin

Pistoleer sells a 100yd reduced 800/900/1000yd Creedmoor target.

We used to shoot the German ring target center at 200yd, but plan to shoot the 1000yd reduced target at 200yd next season.

Also, Dick Hennebry just held a 200yd .22 match at the Cheyenne R&PC.

Cody Smith holds various .22 BPCR & BPTR matches every year at his Smithmoor Range outside of Carpenter, WY every season.

The guys at the Tuesday Afternoon Schuetzen Verein downloaded some circular targets intended for 100 yards, but supposedly sized for 800, 900 & 1,000 or some such, found on from some non-single shot site.  They had 10-ring scoring, no X-ring.  Our first trial, everybody was at least in the 9-ring, lots of 10s.  We gave up, not much of a challenge.

Finding .22 LR bullet holes at 200 yards is the test of a very good spotting scope.

OK, after reading this thread a couple of times and then wandering around the InterWeb for about a half hour, what I have come up with (for 100 yd reduced event) is taking the overall size down to 14.4" wide by 7.2" tall with a 3.6" center square.  Now I think I'll try to find some mild steel plate I can cut them from and make masks to make it faster to spray them.

Was scoring 3, 2, & 1 points for center down to "wings"?  Or was it 5, 3, and 1?  I'm thinking the latter with 15 shots at each range?

Found it! Now I can figure out how the scores worked.  Each distance had 15 shots with 60 points possible, and with three distances, the total possible score was 180 points.  The good scores I saw from Dollymount were in the 160s or so, which would make sense.
