Just got this beauty this week, yesterday was the first chance I had to get it to the range. I love these single shot rifles especially in 45-70.

Do your bullets have a virus?  They look pretty green.  How did it shoot?  It sure looks nice.  Tom

All right, all right , quit makin' fun of my zombie killer bullitts.  Grin

I bought a bunch of different bullets from a couple of local casters one of whom is very into the 'coating' thing'. Pretty much used up all I had and will be casting my own going forward.

As for the gun I spent a lot of time fiddling with the sights, front and rear, so only got out to 50 yards - 1" group 3 rounds. Going back next week to get it out to 100 which is the max. for that particular location. But, I joined another club not to far away that has a long range bay set up for 200, 400, 600 , 800 and 1000 yards.

One thing I did was swap out the post in the front globe sight for a small aperture - the post had a little ball at the top which hid a lot of the target.

Have one in 38-55 and like it a lot. Uberti gets a bad rap sometimes. Mine is a true 38 caliber and .380 is the minimum. Cuts a 3 shot cloverleaf at 100 yds with Ken Waters pet IMR4198 load. I think you'll like it. May need some trigger work to get it smooth. Lee Shavers is the man for that.
Enjoy

Re, what's your load? Are you casting yet? What bullet will it be when you do? Whoops, just watched your video. I noticed that the position of your rifle on the front bag changed from one shot to the next. That can make a difference in where the bullet ends up. Have you tried any other powders?

So far I have shot (4) different loads 55g and 70g of blackpowder as well as 43g and 55g of Triple 7 all under 405g bullets some of which were purchased (flat base) and some I cast (hollow base). I plan on casting 500g bullets (flat base) this week and load those over 70g blackpowder .

Thanks for the tip on bag position,  will pay closer attention in the future. Only other powder I tried was 19g of Trail Boss under a 350g bullet, only because I had them on hand.

Try some Blackhorn 209.  I have several 45-70’s and they all perform outstanding with that powder and bullet weights from 345 to 530 gr.
Makes “smoke” and many will think you are burning BP, but w/o the mess Roll Eyes

Beautiful rifle!

I've been meaning to try some BP cartridges in my Browning 1885 45-70.   But first I have to get some issues worked out with my cast bullets.   First time at the range with cast bullets and I couldn't even get on the paper for a while.
When I finally did, here is what happened:
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I had to get my gunsmith to open up my mold because it was dropping way too small.  And my bullet sizer is too small too.

But in the meantime, I've been having very good success with a mild load using 300 grain HPs and 51.5 grains of IMR 3031.   It's actually a trapdoor load, but SHHH! don't tell the deer that, they think it's a super duper hot load!  It's only tooling along at around 1650 fps but hits like the Hammer of Thor.
