#1 DST's...

For a number of years Wayne Schwartz would install DST's on Ruger single shot rifles.  He has dropped out of sight, up in the UP somewhere.

Does anyone hear know of a gunsmith that currently offers this sort of work?

thanks,

Rich

Me too,
But with my luck after I pay to have them installed they will be banned from use.

I don't know for sure which 'smiths will/will not; can/cannot install them.  We discussed it to some extent in a previous thread about why, or why not, Rugers are used, or not, for schuetzen games.

Basically, as I understand it the small short sets of DSTs  ( the Mauser DST set Brownells sells or used to sell for example) can be pinned into a milled or filed out slot in the lower action of a ruger with some additional shortening of the DST trigger plate.   its pretty straight forward.  but apparently the trick is to adjust or modify the sear lever tail for the DST kick lever to hit it reliably.  It may require work on the sear engagement to allow the lighter tap from the kick to set it off.

Longer wider spaced Kentucky-style DSTs require more effort to shoehorn in especially with the closed trigger guard of a #1.   I would think that any of our experienced single shot smiths should be able to do it, especially with the mauser DST set and on a #3 action.  fitting a longer set into a #1 might be a more complex job experience-level, time, and $$-wise

Once again this is my opinion, but I have a #3 action and a set of Mauser DST just waiting for a little more time and the $$ to order the barrel and reamer for a custom offhand project I've wanted for years.

Yeah, I think this may be a project (at least for me anyways) that I'd hand over to a smith that has done it a time or 2, after he tells me where to buy the DST and which one to get so I get the right one, I mean, it's not like I don't have probably 20 sets in the muzzleloader parts drawer of the workbench.

I was told that Wayne used the T/C sets off of their Hawken rifles.

I have a line on a rough #3, at a decent price.  I just would love to have a 38-90 for hunting, and the ones I have at the house are too big, Wickliffe, or too expensive, Steve Earl Wesson #1 LR; for a rifle that would be subjected to the wear and tear.  And, neither have DST's either.

Thanks,

Rich
