Very nice collection, you have a favorite to shoot?

Could you tell me a little more about the Stevens 417, I've been looking for a model 44 but with no luck. Hard to come by here in Canada but I have seen a few 417s advertised. The 417 looks like a much more robust critter, I wouldn't mind the extra weight as it'll be shot mostly bench and cross sticks. I'm thinking of rebarreling one to 38-55 or 40-65. Should be good deer medicine when not on the range:-)

Regards,

Darryl

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

The 417, or any other Stevens 44 type action, is a bad choice for a rebarreel to .38-55 or .40-65! This action was once chambered for .38-55, but Stevens dropped it, as it didn't hold up well to the .38-55. The action pins shot loose, and soon the guns developed problems over time.
The 44 1/2 action is a much stronger action, introduced by Stevens to handle these cartridges without problem.

Nice bunch ofRifles.  I noticed you didin't include you Martini's in the group.  You do have Martini's other the one that need restored don't you?

Speaking of your Westley Richards, this would be a good board to put it up on for sale.  You have a bunch of fellows that hang out here that are always looking for Project rifles!
