 38/55 did browning make a BPCR ?

  I am thinking of getting a new BPCR made and think I want to try a 38/55 with a scope. 
  Did Browning ever make one in there BPCR ? I thought that I had seen one a year or so back. Maybe something some one built up and I thought it was a Browning.
  Also if I have one made is a 15" twist fast enuff for heavy bullets ?

Tombstone, the .38-55's that Browning made were not the BPCR model, but the Traditional Hunter.  The barrels were light contour, full octagon, 28" long, 1-15" twist...fine for most cowboy action stuff and hunting weight bullets, but less than ideal for silhouettes.  Winchester's new 1885 is basically the same rifle, made by the same Japanese company (Miroku), and has an even slower twist.

In my opinion, if you want to shoot heavy bullets in a .38 you'll need to have a rifle built with a fast (1-12" or thereabouts) twist barrel.  Both Green Mountain and Douglas have blanks available, as do many of the higher end custom barrel makers.

I'm gathering parts for such a rifle, have the action and barrel, now the hard part....what caliber to chamber it in?

Gotta agree with Firstshirt. You will need to rebarrel my only sugestion is while you are rebarreling think about chambering in either 38-50 Remington or 38-56 Winchester both cartridges have more boiler room than the 38-55. With black powder and a longer bullet the 38-55 may be a little under powered at the rams.

I just got a Browning 38-55 Traditional Hunter.  I will be trying it out on long ranges early next month.  One of my shooting buddies does quite well with a 38-55, 15 twist in a custom roller.

The use of the rifle (silhoute vs LR Creedmoor) will force you
to choose either the mid-power .38 chambering or the big 
heavy .38's.  The 38/50 and 38/56 I class as mid-power ; the
38/72 and 38/90 would be the heavy's.
For schutzen and 200 yd target work, the 38/55 is fine. For
steel out to 500m, the 38/56 would probably be the best choice in a .38 .  For the long range, some guys are building
up .38/72's and .38/90's. I suppose they figure they'll get
something out of them that a .40 cal won't deliver, but using
400 + gr bullets and 70 to 90 gr of powder, I'll guess that the
recoil and downrange performance won't be that much of an
improvement. Admittedly, I'm not a compettitor, so I can't
point to any experience with these rounds, but I believe that
you'll be happier with a chambering that suits the rifles intended purpose rather than choosing for any other reason.

I did shoot the 38-55 at fairly long range Sat.  It did quite well at 880 yds on the "bear" target.  Grin It was loaded with 5 gr Rel 7 and 35 gr 2F Goex with a WLR primer and a Lyman 330 gr bullet.  Ran out of ammo before I got to the 1000 yd target.  I used it up getting sight setting from 200 yds out to the bear target.

Shoot a 38-55 with a 1-15 badger barrel.  Paul Jones creedmoor bullet that weighs in at 336 grains with my alloy.  It does very well at silhouette including the rams.

  Thanks all.  May just be a C-Sharps 1875 will be nexted on my list. They have a sporting-target with a heavy round with a pistol grip stock that I like the looks of. I don't know if a scope will go on the round barrel OK ?  Anyone have a set up like this ?

I have a C-Sharps 1875 in 40/65. It is a FINE rifle. Frankly, I like it MUCH better than the '74 Sharps.

Hi Dale 53, I too like the C-Sharps 1875. I have one built in 30-30 with a 1 in 10" that I shoot 220gr. cast bullets in and I love it. I also have a Shiolh in 45cal. 2.1" that I like but the 75 is just trimer and is just as mutch fun( if not more to shoot). I am going to get another one in 38/55.

It is interesting to me that a really superior design is not nearly so revered by the present day shooters.  Of course, if you are really into re-enacting the buffalo days, the '75 did not play a part and the '74 did. That makes a LOT of difference to a lot of folks.

I don't ever remember seing the BPCR's in anything but 40-65 and 45-70. That said i purchased an extra one in 40-65 and had it fitted with a Badger barrel of the same contour in 38-55. Have not had the time to really shoot it but am working on it.
