HELP WITH STEVENS 44 22LR

Had a great day at the range today, Sunny with mild temperature. Took my Stevens 44 that John Taylor relined for me and have put hundreds of rounds through it, even before he did his magic. First shot was fine. Reloaded and cocked the hammer with the usual snap when it sets. This time there was a double snap which quickly caught my attention. Yep, the hammer spring gave it up.
Now, I am OK with basic things if I have good instructions. I can detail strip an S&W revolver. Only because I've done it about 100 times over the years. The Stevens I have never had apart except to remove the barrel when I sent it to John for the reline. This 44 has screws on both sides of the action and I believe the right side is the side to remove those screw(s)

OK, I need help in disassembly to get to the hammer spring.
If someone would be so good as to help with that I would certainly appreciate it.

Also who would be the best person to get a replacement hammer spring from?

If you want to send a PM that would be fine.

Thanks everyone for the help.

You shouldn't need to mess with the action pins.  Take the wood screws out of the tangs and slide the buttstock off the rifle.  The spring and its setup will be visible between the tangs.

Depending on the vintage, the spring can be screwed to the tang or butt up against a screw in the tang.  Check with CPA for replacements.  You want a 44 screw; a 44-1/2 screw doesn't work unless your action is one of the very uncommon separate tang double set-trigger models.

The beauty of the 44 is it's simplicity. Remove the buttstock and the spring is right there. It's been awhile since I've had any of mine apart but I seem to remember that the only other thing that you may have to is to remove is the hammer so that you can engage the spring by sliding the hammer down from the top when the spring isn't at full tension. Don't overthink it. Nothing is going to go flying across the room and if you can strip and reassemble a revolver you can do a 44 while under the influence. Only other thing is that a guide pin is quite handy to align the screws on both the 44 and 441/2.

Mainsprings for early 44's can be had from Wisner's, Inc. (The kind that simply butts up against the anchor screw.)

After removing the buttstock, open the action to lower the breech block, pull the hammer back off of half cock and lower the hammer as far forward as it will go with pulling the trigger, this should remove most of the tension on the mainspring so removing or installing it should be fairly simple.

The "screws" on the right side are really nuts.  Once the tension is off the hammer and the trigger, use a screwdriver to hold them in place while you remove the real screws from the left.  Likewise, hold them in place when you reinsert and tighten the real screws.

Hey guys I removed the buttstock and the mainspring was lying there broken. Looked on Wisners's parts and he has one listed. and apparently it butts up against the stud with a screw inn the top of it on the lower tang behind (toward butt) of the trigger spring which is held in place by a screw.

My question is...does the bow inn the spring go downward or up, ie, lower tang or top tang. That is the only question at this time. Installing it appears rather simple.

My only concern is " wiill I wind up with the same great trigger I had before"

Thanks so much to everyone for the many tips on this particular model. All of you have been great to help and much appreciated. This is my favorite 22. I can spend a whole afternoon shooting it and hardly go through 50 rds.

Bow up, think rainbow and your trigger should remain unchanged. Enjoy your rifle, I have five of them from 22 to 44/40 [my deer rifle] and I love them all.

Thanks Jonathon. I'm reading this over breakfast and was thinking which of my four 44's I needed to pull the butt off of because I couldn't for the life of me remember if it was bow up or down!

Jonathan, thanks for the info. I will order the new mainspring from Wisner today. I have 3 of the 44's and they all have excellent triggers and I would not want to get one that was like choking a cat. No I would not choke a cat.
I have 22lr, the one that broke, a 25-20SS and both wear Lyman Targetspots. I also have a 44 in 38-55 that is pristine in and out and has a very heavy barrel. It wears a Malcolm reproduction scope that was on it when I acquired it and shoots quite well.
My only regret is that I did not discover the Stevens 44 and 441/2 years ago.
Take care

Bob

Don't order just one mainspring.  I learned that.

I’ve made several 44 mainsprings from old trap springs for my 44 and for friend’s 44’s. I guess I have more time than $$. I keep a spare or two with me just in case.

One of my shooting pal’s spring broke while we were at a match. I had a spare with me so we pulled his stock off to replace his spring. His broken spring was a laminated affair. Several layers of thin spring stock with two tiny rivets holding the layers together. All but one layer had broken at a rivet, pieces laying there, and the spring flopped off the retainer screw. Anybody ever seen that type of spring in a 44? We figured it was a home made deal.
