Regardless if it is a standard twist or a gain twist you are NEVER EVER supposed to lap a RKS barrel.

For accuracy it has a continuous precision choke of .0004" from the chamber to the muzzle.

Lapping will result in variations or change the degree of angle of the choking or interupt the continuity of the perfect slopped choke Ron has installed.
Doing so will reduce your accuracy by affecting the perfect precision choke he has already installed in the rifle.

It is also strongly recommended to NEVER EVER use jacketed bullets in a rifle solely intended to shoot cast bullets since copper fouling cannot be readily and completely removed and may significantly affect accuracy when you start using cast bullets (some of the time).

Update on my barrel. Ok so after checking the twist rate several times to be sure and slugging the barrel there is a noticeable "jump" about three inches forward of the chamber indicating an oversize condition to some degree. What was thought to be 1 in 16.5 is actually 1 in 22. I called and talked with Gerald Smith at RKS and he said send it back and he would replace it with a new barrel. Was very nice to talk with on the phone and said he would get one in the works. I want to thank everyone for their help and advise. Will give another update when I get the new one installed.

Valuable Post, thank you..

I have several barrels to be installed on couple of projects.
One is a RKS Gain twist 32 cal...

I'll definitely check them all before I send them off to get profiled and fitted

I have 5  vintage single shot rifles ranging from an 1882 #16 Maynard thru two 1885’ to a #2 rolling block and a holland and holland rook. I probably have 15 different .22 ammos ranging from Aguila (.07 cents a round up to others at .35 cents a round. I have been quite surprised. Each rifle seems to like something different. And it seems to vary depending on variables such as temperature, humidity and distances. The old “ you have to find what the rifle likes” really does work.

With a twist rate of 1 in 22 it sounds closer to a 22 short barrel. I have a heavy octagon barrel that I swapped into that did not shoot 22LR. When I checked the twist rate it turned out to be 1 in 20" twist. It is now being fitted to a rolling block chambered in 22 short. Someday I will get it finnished.

As stated I called and talked with RKS and he said he would make me a new barrel. He did say on the phone after receiving it and checking it could find nothing wrong. It was definitely stamped 1 in 16.5 out of the box but was 1 in 22. I checked it several times with the same result. I don't know what happened on his end. Maybe it was miss stamped but I don't know and he didn't elaborate. Bottom line is I am getting a new barrel. Don't know what he will do with the other one. It was indexed to an original action. It would make a good 22 short barrel. Stuff happens and I am not upset with anyone. He was gracious enough to replace it and that says a lot. I will get the new one fitted up and go from there.
