Making A Resizing/Reloading Die Set (Read 138 times)

	Hi guys, I have been on a hunt for a set of G&H 22-3000 reloading dies (see my post in WTB) with no luck yet! I have contacted a couple companies, C&H Tool and Redding NO Joy! So I thought if I had a reamer made I could make my own set of reloading die??? So what are the pit-falls of doing that??? Can I use a dimensioned cartridge drawing (for the 22-3000) to make the reamer and then use it to cut a resizing die or is there a tolerance type dimension I ned on the drawing to have on the reamer so the case snap back is correct??? Just thinking out of the box here, any thoughts and or help would be appreciated if any of you have done this before. regards

	Companys that mfg'r chambering reamers used to sell the same caliber chambering reamer but was specificly made for cutting a reloading die (FL Sizer). The dimensions on those reloading die reamers are slightly smaller so that it actually does resize the case. I don't know if they still offer such, but you can check with the reamer mfg'rs. I would think that you could use an existing but orphaned FL sizer in another caliber to re-cut into the caliber you need. Some older dies are just case hardened and can be easily drawn back. Re-hardening really isn't necessary for the mat of use it may see. I think RCBS used to case harden their dies back when.

	I have made many dies, and modified some. My approach is I bought a batch of 10 correctly threaded grade 5 black steel bolts from Fastenall. I drew them out to about 600 degrees to insure they werent too hard to ream. Drilled out to bore diameter in the lathe, then used a reamer to cut the chamber. As mentioned before, the reamer needs to be undersized. I think I could make a passable .22-3000 die by drilling and reaming a blank to .002" under neck dia, then using a tapered reamer to cut the 1 degree body taper, and then using a 5 degree tapered reamer to cut a shoulder. By cutting the shoulder deep enought to make the body just over ideal length, you could face off the die a bit at a time until it's perfectly to length.

	You have some R2 Lovell brass don't you? What part of some existing die would you have to run it into to get the shoulder down enough to get it to chamber and then fire form it? 22 Hornet, 22 K-Hornet, a 6mm neck with a tapered reamer?

	oneatatime, thanks for the response, I have tried 22 hornet and a 218 Bee neither worked. One of the other DSA members suggested trying a 25-20 SS dies? There is another club member I know that has a set I just haven't called him yet. That is my next option thx
