.25 barrel twist

Thinking of building a .25, you know, quarter bore.   Got a .259 rcbs modified, 120grain mold, casts decent bullets.  What twist and make of barrel would you go with?  Also, have several hundred .25 hornet cases…thx in advance….

Well, Winchester gave the original 25-35 (what, 117 grains) an 8 twist. A 10 twist is good for 100 grains. How about a BRC choked barrel.

My CPA is chambered in 25-20 WCF. With a 10 twist Douglas barrel using a 120 Mos bullet it shoots quite well.

I wouldn't hesitate to use a choked BRC barrel. The BRC barrels I have (and ones I have seen used at matches) are second to none and are my first choice now.

I would choose a 25-35 WCF over all the other .25 caliber options. It's a proven performer, brass is easy to find or make, no problems dumping powder in the chamber, and the brass will last forever.

Just my honest opinion. Cool

I’ll be following this. I have a 25 Hornet reamer, 25 Hornet dies, a lonely lowwall receiver, and some drop dead gorgeous lumber all waiting to be twisted together. The barrel has been the question so far.
Another choice is Preferred Barrels. They use Wilson blanks and will custom contour your tube of choice for something like $35 over the price of a blank, in the neighborhood of $340 out the door.
Several picky shooters I know have their barrels and if there was a problem with accuracy, they would have said something right away. All of them shoot very well with a couple capable of one hole groups when the shooter is on his game.

Ron Smith made me a  gain twist barrel on a 1885 High Wall finishing at 9:1 twist for me to shoot my 122 grain Paul Jones spitzer bullet chambered in .25 RKS.

You fill find a sweet spot around 1600 fps.

Caliber      0.259      Inches
Bullet Weight      122      Grains
Bullet Length      1.05      Inches
Barrel Twist      9      Inches/turn
muzzle velocity      1600      fps
Temperature      50      degrees Fahrenheit (59 is standard)
Pressure      29.92      inches of mercury (29.92 is standard)

Gyroscopic Stability (Sg) =      2.01
