First Attempt at Pouring a Pewter Nosecap
Aug 23rd, 2025 at 5:32pm
Print Post
I purchased a sporterized Danish RB last year and decided to try my hand at restocking it into a sporting rifle configuration. I purchased new wood from Treebone Carving. Instead of attaching an original style Remington steel nosecap, I decided to try my hand at pouring a pewter one. She's not perfect but I'm happy with my first attempt.

Sorry for the size of the pics. I am having trouble trying to get them to a more reasonable size.

Looks darn good to me! I poured a Hershel House type nosecap on a long rifle I built, and it took me several tries to get it right.

Great work!  Wink

You are welcome.  In all fairness someone had to show me how to do that.  Grin

Great looking work, by the way.

I recently finished pouring a faux horn tip on my Ballard Scheutzen rifle using epoxy to make the "horn" tip. A friend told me how to do it, but it didn't go so well the first try! A poor seal around the nose of the "mold" caused a major leak, which resulted in half my epoxy running out. Second attempt after sealing it better went well, and then I shaped it down once the epoxy set up.

Your pewter tip looks excellent! How did you build up a "dam" around it to hold the molten pewter?

Thanks guys. It took me a while to decide on a design that I liked. I liked this design .... simple with a nice flourish.
I used a file folder for the dam. I cut a section that was large enough for the job. I set it in the barrel channel of the forearm and installed the barrel. I placed some clay in the forearm to prevent pewter from running down the barrel channel.
I then rolled the folder around the forearm and secured it with tape.

Doesn't look like an "attempt" to me. Looks like a good pour...

That nosecap looks great!
My first attempt was OK but had several flaws. Not sure how to re-do it. I was thinking of melting a pot of tin, sticking the end of the stock in the pot till the tin melted off the wood, making some corrections to the inletting and re-pouring. Any suggestions?

Tin melts slightly lower temp than pewter, but I'd wonder if the 470 degrees of pewter melting point might not singe the wood?

If it is not to large of an imperfection, I have used low temp solder with some success in filling the voids.
