Correcting an error on a finished stock

This post is intended to show, when building a rifle, a reason why it is important to plan the project out to the very end.

When I originally shaped this stock out I apparently had not put much thought into having it checkered.  I turned the front of the cheek rest down way to far, making it difficult to add checkering, at least the checkering pattern I have decided to use.

So here is what I did to correct the problem. keep in mind this stock was finished before I realized what I did.  I actually started this correction today.

I will show the checkering I would like and the before and after pictures in the second post.

This first picture shows the start of reshaping.

The second, the area is now reshaped and the grain raising process is done.

This third picture shows what it looks like after a black dye was applied and the excess removed.

The fourth picture shows what it looks like after a deep red dye was applied and the excess removed.

Fifth shows after an application of what is called red oil.

Of course, matching the colors in any repair is important.  Since I did this work originally it is fairly easy to get a match and I do keep notes as to how I finish a stock.

This first picture is the checkering pattern that I would like.

Then the before picture.  This is the best picture I have showing how I originally shaped this area.  I was in the process of finishing the wood in this picture.

Lastly, the corrected area with the first coat of finish applied.

Amazingly nice repair, Bob.

As you know, I like unusual cheekpiece transitions.  If you wanted even more clearance for the checkering, you could do this:
