Help with Bullet Mold for 32 cal Schuetzen Rifle

Needing to order a bullet mold for a new to me Ballard Schuetzen Rifle with a CPA Barrel. The chamber is 8.15X46R. The 1-16 Douglas XX barrel is stamped .3213 groove (.313+ bore) and looking at my chamber cast it does not appear to have a very long lead, I can see the land start about .150" ahead of the chamber neck end and the taper appears to be no more than .100" long to reach full land height. From what I read (for 16 twist) my bullet choice should not be longer than 3X the bullet diameter so that would be about .950" long. I am going to breech seat the bullet ahead of the case so need a tapered design I think.. Are there recommendations out there for a good bullet that I can get Buffalo Arms or Accurate to make a mold. I am looking at one "Dr  Hudson" Tapered design that is .95" long and weighs 185gr. (Accurate 32-185H-D) Thank in advance for your Help.

To begin with, the throat in a BS barrel, isn't very important. Your throat, isn't anything like a 8.15 x 46R throat, it's more like a standard 32/40 throat. The 8.15's have very long throats and the twist rated is 14.2". Grooves are usually under .319 but, can be found, up to .323.

I have a 8.15 x 46R rifle and a 16 twist Douglas barreled 32/40. The 16 twist will stabilize a spitzer bullet, that is 1.110 long, with a .060 meplat. I found this by shortening a RL spitzer, that started out at 1.160. A flat nose, won't stabilize at that length though, more like 1.06.

With a short lead, a tappered bullet helps to keep from distorting the bullet when your seating it BUT, to much tapper will throw fliers. For a short throat, I like ~.004 tapper from the groove size, not the base band. .002 for longer throats.

Bore riding bullets, like the Hudson bullet, work well too. For that, you need a nose, at least .001 (.002 is better) larger than the bore size and .001/.002 larger on the base band than the groove size.

Also, nothing harder than 16/1 lead/tin alloy, Everyone should start with 20/1 and try experimenting with it from there.

frnkeore offered some words of wisdom. One more thing you might consider prior to ordering a mold; do a cerrosafe chamber cast that includes a couple inches of rifling. That way you can precisely measure the chamber, throat, leade and rifling. Those measurements should help order a bullet mold that properly fits your rifle.
Good luck and please get back to us with your results.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

When Frank speaks, I listen. (I'm forever in his debt for an old .30 GC'ed spitzer design of his, 309-169 FN (Elco), that is a never-fail in my Springfields.)

Anecdotally, that Accurate 185gr. Hudson bullet is my favorite go-to in a couple .32-40's, a couple of them with diameters tailored to specific needs.

The chamber cast I did with Cerrosafe included the first inch or more of the rifling.

Great helpful information so far gentlemen. I really appreciate this. At $200+ per for some bullet molds hopefully I can get something that works good first go round without wasting time and money.
