How to breech seat

I have been reloading for 50 years and have never tried breech seating. Can anyone suggest a good read or video on the subject? I have several guns I can experiment with just don't know how to get started.

An excellent reference is “ Loading and Shooting Traditional American Schuetzen Rifles” by our own Randy Wright.

Basically you shove a bullet into the chamber seat it partially into the rifling with a plugged case, or a push seater or mechanical seater. Insert a freshly primed case with an appropriate powder charge and shoot. Repeat as necessary

I will second buying Randy Wright's book. It is very informative and has excellent illustrations.

The illustration below shows how to breech seat a bullet. Obviously there is a lot more to it but it shows the concept.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Ok I have the basic's now. I can make the tools I will need and I see the concept. One question. When you charge the case with powder do you use a wad of some sort to hold it in place and not spill out? I have a 32-40 Hepburn I want to try first. Where can I find Mr Wright's book?

Send a PM to RSW here on the forum. That will get you to Randy Wright so you can buy his book.

I would avoid using a wad if possible.

See I have a lot to learn. My Hepburn I know can do better. I am just not getting the accuracy with fixed ammo I know it is capable of so breech seating is the next step. Will contact RSW.

Is there an accuracy impact if you are using a 0.030” thick veggie wad? Maybe if the wad is not seated (just barely into the case mouth) perfectly perpendicular to axis of the case?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I've never had a reason to need a wad. With smokeless powders the charge is small enough that unless you pointed the case downhill it's never going to come out. I simply charge the case and insert it into the chamber.
You will find out that in most instances your fixed load isn't going to be enough powder when breach seated. Because of the greater case capacity it's going to take a bit more powder to get the same velocities as fixed bullets get.

The only time I use a wad is when I am using short cases like my 25 Hornet and 32 Miller Short.  They tend to spill powder into the chamber especially in a high wall action.  Not done for accuracy reasons.

I also am interested in breach seating but have a question with black powder do you have to worry about a gap between the wad and the base of the bullet?

In my .32-40 Stevens-Pope barraled Ballard, I am using Swiss 1 1/2 FG, breech seating a tapered BACO copy of Pope bullet.  I couldn,t get consistant accuracy until I tried Steve Garbys suggestion of using a lubricated felt .32 Wonder Wad seated against bullet base after breach seating bullet.  Groups tightened up and are consistant.  I can feel case mouth contact and slightly compress felt wad as action closed.
